Apple gets FCC approval to sell the iPhone

The FCC has approved the iPhone today (on 17th May, 2007) and based on the information available from the documents posted on FCC website, it looks like Apple has set itself a deadline of 30th June to launch the iPhone. Apple seems to have passed the approval process with flying colors which is no big surprise.

Unfortunately, the documentation has not revealed any hidden feature (thus far) then the ones announced by Steve Jobs in his keynote address.

I guess your wish-list for UTMS high-speed date etc will need to wait for the next version of the iPhone.

Some minor details that were available in the FCC documents are mentioned below:

  • Apple refers to the iPhone with a model name of A1203. It isn’t clear what this means; it may be an internal name, or imply that there were previous designs called A1201 and A1202.
  • The FCC label won’t be a stick-on label like most phones, and it won’t be hidden under the battery. Instead, it will be laser etched onto the phone case itself.
  • The maximum output of the iPhone was 0.394 watts in the GSM850 band, and 1.53 Watts in the GSM 1900 band which seems is quite standard.

The interesting bit of information from the document was that Apple has asked that the photos of the internal and externals of the iPhone as well as the photos of the user manual remain confidential until 30th June.

I don't believe it means that 30th June will be the release date, but probably that's the deadline Apple has set itself. Its best to wait for Apple or AT&T or both to announce the launch date rather than spread rumors about it.
