23 Steps to Ringtone Freedom on your iPhone

If you are one of those who does not like the ringtones that are available on your iPhone, then there is good news for you. This week we had the news of hackers gaining full access to iPhone's filesystem and I had mentioned that it throws up a host of possibilities.

I was right, folks at HacktheiPhone.com have used these iPhone hacks and have published a step by step guide to help you achieve iPhone ringtone freedom.

For more details available after the jump.

As you might except the instructions make use of iPhoneInterface (which only works for MAC currently) and "How to Escape Jail" hacks which opened up access to iPhone filesystem and UI.

For all those who are worried of screwing up their iPhone, the good thing about this iPhone hack is if you find the iPhone acting weird, you can just put it into recovery mode (press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button for a full 25 seconds), then launch iTunes and allow it to restore the iPhone.

I had carried out an article prior to the iPhone launch where I had predicted that Apple could change the ringtone industry with the iPhone for good, but I had not imagined that it would be an iPhone hack which would be the first to let you have custom ringtones on your iPhone.

However, I am sure it is not too long that Apple provides an easier and quicker way to achieve this using iTunes. I guess for all those you can't wait can follow this step by step guide to iPhone ringtone freedom.

Unfortunately the only issue that I see with this iPhone hack is that the latest annoying song like “Who Let The Dogs Out” gets popular, it will allow people to make it their ringtone on their iPhone. *sigh* I guess not every hack is for the better."

Update: Here’s a teaser video of an iPhone with custom ringtones:

It sucks that we have to go to this much trouble to get some decent ringtones. When I had my razr, I was able to make my own ringtones and then send them to my phone via bluetooth on my MacBook. I think I'm gonna hold off on this hack…

I have found that the jailbreak binary is for intel-based machines only. Haven't found anything like it for Universal or PPC. The iPhoneInterface works fine.
