One of the programs that had generated buzz at the iPhoneDev camp was AppMarks. AppMarks is a web desktop for the iPhone that allows an iPhone user to create a customized home page with iPhone-like icons.
For example, you can put icons of your favorite websites, iPhone web apps or widgets on your home page if you are most likely to use them every time you turn on the iPhone making AppMarks the perfect homepage for your iPhone's Safari browser.
AppMarks runs in Safari and presents icon "appmarks" of your favorite web apps, widgets, and sites making use of the web 2.0 capabilities of the iPhone. Simply tap an appmark to launch it or use the toolbar to rearrange, add, or remove appmarks.
The first time you launch AppMarks, it is set up with sixteen appmarks to get you started. You can add your own favorites, tap the "+" button and enter the title and URL. You can also remove appmarks, tap the "Edit" button and tap the red "-" marks.
I really liked what these guys are doing, iPhone's user interface might be revolutionary but it can be even better if you can cut down on the taps, which is what AppMarks is trying to optimize for iPhone users.
It will be interesting to see how AppMarks plans to monetize this iPhone
application or on how they plan to stay ahead of the competition as you
are sure to see similar applications popping up looking at the response
it has got.
Anyways competition is always healthy, I guess one of the reasons for them to roll out some new features and useful optimizations in the last few weeks after the launch based on feedback they have received. Some of them are listed below:
- Improved Synchronization
- Ability to Edit Icons
- Reduced bandwidth and faster loading critical to any applications success on the iPhone which uses AT&T's EDGE network.
So to make AppMarks the homepage on your iPhone's Safari browser, follow this link. You can also try it in your browser to get a feel on how it works.
Keep up the good work AppMarks!
