Breaking News: iPhone update (1.0.2) released for bug fixes
Apple has just pushed out the second firmware update for the iPhone (version 1.0.2), the first firmware update was on 31st July. Based on the information available as of now the update seems to be only for bug fixes and there have been no reports so far of any features being unlocked. Read on for more details.
Based on initial information that is trickling in, quite a few iPhone users who had customized their iPhone's with one of those iPhone Hacks are reporting issues and seem to be forced into doing a restore to get the latest update which means all the iPhone Hacks are wiped out, quite similar to the user experience observed with first firmware update. (see iPhoneHacks.com, 31 July 2007, FIRST iPhone update (1.0.1) released for security and bug fixes)
Unfortunately, there is no reasons to get excited with this update as based on the information available as of now the update seems to be just for bug fixes and there have been no reports of any features being unlocked.
But it is still early to confirm, remember there were speculations that the "Send to Web Gallery" feature was introduced in update 1.0.1 as a time based feature and was turned on when Apple announced that they have fully integrated .Mac Web Gallery with iPhone. (see iPhoneHacks.com, 7 August 2007, .Mac Web Gallery fully integrated with iPhone, post photos from your iPhone now)
Some of things observed so far:
- The size of the firmware update is 3.71 mb, though people at Gizmodo got a 92.1 mb file (looks like on their hacked iPhone).
- Folks at Gizmodo have confirmed that iFuntastic 2.5 works fine on the new 1.0.2 firmware.
- Engadget guys have faced issues with their hacked iPhone. Here is what they had to say:
"We take it back about our backup working properly. Despite the fact that we had a couple of error messages during the upgrade which seemed innocuous, this iPhone update wiped out our device and refused to restore a backup, instead creating a new backup based on a fresh restore. In other words: we just lost everything on our friggin device and the automatic backup is gone."
- Engadget is confirming that Jailbreak still works on the new firmware.
Update:
- From Macrumors forums: "Tested the wifi and it is coming in at +1600 kbps - fastest result I've seen by about 50%."
- Richard from wirelessinfo.com says installer.app works. More hacks confirmed as still Juicy.
- People over at the Macrumors forums are reporting all sorts of fixes to WiFi and Cellular reception, which haven't been proven.
Please stay tuned @ iPhoneHacks.com for further updates on the latest iPhone firmware update.
