iPhone Tips & Tricks: Send and receive MMS on your iPhone

iPhone

You might already know it but when I read this trick over at iPhone Central @ MacWorld, I thought of sharing it you. One of the features missing in the iPhone is it's lack of integrated support for MMS. If you were used to using MMS in your previous mobile phone then it can be that much more painful. However, there is some good news for you.

You can make use iPhone’s built-in support for email to work around this lack of functionality to send and receive picture messages and importantly without the need of some nerdy iPhone hack.

So how does it work? You must be aware that all wireless providers assign their subscribers an email address. So there is the secret of this iPhone trick, if you send an email to that email address which is based on your phone number, the email will get delivered as a text message. Similarly sending a picture to that email address using iPhone's built in "Email Photo" functionality will result in it getting delivered as a picture message (MMS).

The important part of the trick is also knowing the address of the contact you want to send a picture message to. Below is the list of common providers thanks to folks at Uneasy Silence, however do get it confirmed with your friend:

(All you will need to do is enter the recipients 10 digit number into the appropriate carrier field.)

    Alltel = xxxxxxxxxx@message.alltel.com
    AT&T = xxxxxxxxxx@mms.att.net
    Boost Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@myboostmobile.com
    Cingular (AT&T) = xxxxxxxxxx@mms.mycingular.com
    Einstein PCS = xxxxxxxxxx@einsteinmms.com
    Sprint = xxxxxxxxxx@messaging.sprintpcs.com
    T-Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@tmomail.net
    US Cellular = xxxxxxxxxx@mms.uscc.net
    Verizon Wireless = xxxxxxxxxx@vzwpix.com
    Virgin Mobile = xxxxxxxxxx@vmobl.com

The same principle works while receiving picture messages thanks to the built-in email client. All your friend needs to do is send the picture as an email to the email account that has been setup on your iPhone for you to receive a picture message.

Though we now have a workaround to the MMS limitation on your iPhone, you will agree that its not the ideal (Apple) solution, lets hope Steve Jobs is listening and enables true MMS support in future firmware updates.

  2. lizzah says:

I have tried numerous times to send a picture through email on my iPhone, and it doesn't work. The receiving phone (a Motorola Razr), gets the text and the subject of the message but no picture. This is very aggravating, as I send a lot of pictures and it's not working!!!

  3. eric says:

  6. Useless says:

Why do people keep posting these useless "hints" EMAIL is NOT MMS.

  7. Danny says:

This works great, but one downfall is that it doesn't count as "in network" messaging for your friends when they send you picture messages. Pretty lame Apple/AT&T

  8. Heidi says:

I still cannot send or recieve pictures!!! I keep getting the message that the connection to outgoing server "imap.emailsrvr.com" failed? What does that mean and how do I fix it? I am amazed that with all the technolgy this phone has, that it can't simply send or get pics????

  9. Sabra Bartlett says:

It worked for me!…iPhone to Razr, Razr to iPhone.
    Perfect!!

I have a much better idea. If you guys have Installer, install the application "Swirl MMS" you can send pics as long as there is Wireless Internet. Just recently i started receiving Picture Messages, however; I have not figured out to which file or folder the pics go to. Thanks to Adel Hallak for this info!

  13. AnaLee says:

Emailing totally works for me. I send my boyfriend pics all of the time, he has Verizon and it always works. We still haven't figured out how to get it to work for him sending me pics though.

  14. Travis says:

to MATT you say your friend recieves the TEXT but not the pic… the address has to be **********@mms.att.net
    not
    **********@txt.att.net

  15. Adel Hallak says:

    Hey guys,
Follow my instructions and thank me later…here you go:

First you need the Application Swirly MMS- add this from
    Swirly's source – swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml and add version 0.3.2.
Install the package named "SwirlyMMS from Swirlyspace", ver 0.3.1. Follow the installation instructions (which means you must restart your phone when installation has finsihed)

Then go to Settings and fill out this info:
you can find settings for other carriers on other blogs.

    T-Mobile (USA)
    MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
    Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
    MMS-APN: wap.voicestream.com
    User: empty
    Pass: empty

A screen will display that you need to install Mobile finder/Mobile Viewer to be able to see pictures. Go ahead and go to installer, all packages, scroll all the way down to Mobile Finder, install it, then go back and install Mobile Viewer.
Now you are done! Have someone send you an mms. It should show under Swirly MMS. Open it then click fetch. It will download then display this message:

"all fetched mms-files are stored in/var/mobile/media/mmsfiles"

Click the menu button. Now you are on your home screen. Scroll to see the icon “Preview” and click it. Click “Open” . you will then have 5 folders displayed:

    1. …
    2. Bin
    3. Lib
    4. Library
    5. Media

Double click on the folder “…” then click on folder “mobile” then folder “media” then folder “MMSfiles” then BINGO! All your received pictures are there!!! Good Luck… Big Thanks to Adel Hallak.

    Vodafone ES
    Movistar ES
    Orange ES

  21. Adel Hallak says:

FYI- you do not need Mibile Finder or Mobile Viewer if you have the New Swirly…i think most ppl have that now!

  22. Michael T Kerrrr says:

do u have to pay for the new Swirly? how can i have it for free?

  23. eric says:

on the new version of swirly do you have to know your carrier's mms settings? also do you have to have an active mms plan with your carrier?

  24. Sarah says:

I tried to send an MMS to an alltel phone e-mail (phone#@message.alltel.com) and all she got was text that said picture.jpg the picture didn't show up

  25. Goodole1 says:

I'm trying to locate the address after the @ for metropc, does anyone have a clue?

    Thanks

  26. Gwen says:

does it cost like a text message to send a pix message through email but have it appear a a pix message on the other phone?

  27. tommy says:

does anyone have att and atleast now the correct working settings if u do please please let me know for swirly

  28. dno says:

Do not get swirly if you are on AT&T. This trick is using what's called an SMS gateway. Wiki it and you will get all the info you need including a comprehensive list of international carrier gateway addresses. Keep in mind that some carriers have two addresses, one for SMS and one for MMS.

Sending a text to an email address is as easy as putting in an email address instead of a phone number.

    Hope this helps. Cheers.

  29. louisa says:

  32. jason says:

this is ridiculous!! seriously we know we can already email a photo!! if i wanted to e-mail a photo i would just do that to begin with!! and the same on their end!! if they ( the person you are receiving a picture text from) was able to e-mail you a pic off of their phone they would just send you an e-mail!! this is a waist of time!! i don't need help sending an e-mail

  33. paulie says:

    Another waste of time.
    It doesn't work (period)

It's amazing how gullible we are… Slick expensive iphone that does lots of useless things, but can't take vid or send MMS.

    zzz

  34. Yves says:

What about if you want to send pictures to a person who has MetroPCS? I tried having them send a text from their phone to an email account to view their cell number email address and tried it that way but it didn't work =/

  35. Yves says:

    My thoughts exactly!

  36. Brian says:

I am wondering something similar. I know that you can have them send it to an e-mail address, gmail, yahoo, etc. But I have 2 questions. 1) is there a way to somehow link your e-mail (not xxxxxxxxxx@my.att.com)to your phone? Ex. If a friend sends an MMS to my phone number, can i set it up to automatically route to my e-mail address?? 2) Instead of going through the e-mail crap, if a friend sends me an MMS, can I just take that message and forward it to my e-mail and open the attachment that way? Instead of having them send it directly to my email?

  38. Simon says:

    Simon,

Im english i have a Iphone on 02 network and i can receieve picture message from any other network but have to log on to the website with a special code….its still really Shocking that something so advanced as the iphone doesnt have the simple technology to recieve or send stuff via MMS OR BLUETOOTH FOR THAT MATTER! Huge Downfall In my opinion….but i guess we shall see for Summer 09 Awaits the 4g Iphone! To Rival Sony's PSP….They want it to be a PSP with Phone Capabilitys…

Could It be Too Much in one Package We shall See!!!

  39. Ralph says:

The MMS features at cingular and ATT have been restricted. I get the message that the email has failed due to this. What am I doing wrong. This is lame in 2009. MMS should be an inbred feature of all phones that take pictures.

  40. mapobean says:

i see that and tried but can't seem to get it to work for att carrier do you know what it would be for att they think i have a LG VU

  41. Ray says:

That's where Send MMS from ifind2 comes in; it's not my app and I'm not spamming or promoting it but liked this app so much that I had to tell everyone about it since AT&T and Apple can't seem to get there act together. This app sends to all service providers including Cricket which is Metro. Check it out at http://MMS.ifind2.com

  42. great post always wanted to find out to scroll top many thanks.

  43. idiots says:

It only doesn't work, for those of you having problems, because you don't know what you are doing. I've done it multiple times and have seen it being done.
Stop calling things a waist of time and saying things are stupid because you don't know how to work your own phones.

  44. Person says:

yeah, that's not the right extension for verizon. for verizon it's: **********@VTEXT.COM

    hope this helped. :)

  45. David n memphis says:
