Ringtone functionality in iTunes now activated: iTunes Ringtone Editor hands-on (Updated)

Ringtone functionality in iTunes now activated: iTunes Ringtone Editor hands-on (Updated)

As you would expect from Apple, the iTunes Ringtone editor seems very easy and convenient to use. So this is how it works? With the new version of iTunes, there is an additional column which will have a little bell against a song to indicate that you can add the song as a ringtone (as seen in the screenshot below).  I guess due to some copyright issues not all songs are available as ringtones though you will still have around half a million "ringtone ready songs" to choose from.

Breaking News – $200 price drop on 8GB iPhone official: AT&T stores better prepared?

Breaking News – $200 price drop on 8GB iPhone official: AT&T stores better prepared?

If you bought an iPhone within the last 14 days at one of AT&T’s stores then you might find this quite useful. As per the tip AT&T stores have been given detailed Q&A on how to handle the price drop of $200 for iPhone customers who are within their 14 day return period. Here are some of the points:

  • AT&T stores have been asked to proactively contact customers who purchased an iPhone on September 5th prior to promotional price announcement to deliver the good news on the promotional price and offer a price adjustment.
  • They have detailed procedure on how to handle price adjustments (the $200 credit) for customers who have purchased an iPhone less than 14 days ago (between Aug 23 and Sep 5) and also instruction on not to charge the 10% restocking fee as it is applicable when the device is returned.
  • The customer should go to the AT&T store within 14 days (by September 18th) to have the price adjustment processed.
  • The first step of the price adjustment process as you expect is verifying purchase information by original receipt.
  • As expected, customers outside the 14 day price match period for iPhone are not eligible for the credit.

So if you are an AT&T customer and have bought your iPhone within the last 14 days; rush to the AT&T store (maybe a call before you go to the store is a better idea) and get your $200 credit today and don’t forget to let us know if you faced any issues for the benefit of other readers.

Update (Sept 6th, 2007):

We finally have some good news for all those who bought their iPhone prior to Aug 23rd, 2007. In the letter to early iPhone customer’s Steve Jobs has offered every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or
AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store.

To read Steve Job’s open letter, follow this link.

Poll: Will you buy a ringtone for 99c or iPhone app for a one time fee or use free iPhone Hacks?

Poll: Will you buy a ringtone for 99c or iPhone app for a one time fee or use free iPhone Hacks?

Steve Jobs during the special event today (5th Sept, 2007) has announced the biggest feature in the new version of iTunes: ringtones and he wants you to be able to make your own ringtone rather than somebody else. Build your own ringtones from songs bought on iTunes.

So how does it work?

When you plug your iPhone to your computer, with the new version of iTunes you will start seeing a new column which will show the songs you will be able to make ringtones out of. You can then select any 30 seconds of a songs with fade in/fade outs and when you are ready  and now for the disappointing part, click the buy button, yes to add each of the song you have bought to add it as your ringtone you will  have to shell out an additional 99c. I guess we all expected that however I had thought it would be a lot cheaper for the 30 seconds clips. It basically means that if you don’t have the song and want to use it just as a ringtone, it will cost you a neat $1.98.

You will have the option to make it either as your default ringtone or assign it to your favorite people when they call. So the new version of iTunes will have the custom ringtone maker built-in. You will need to wait for next week for this to be turned on to test this new functionality.

MobileChat: Native Instant Messaging client for iPhone

MobileChat: Native Instant Messaging client for iPhone

The latest iPhone hack, MobileChat version 1.0 is currently in beta and only supports the AIM IM protocol, it also has basic IM features like full buddylist, ability to change status between away and online, as well as ability to suspend and stay online. The sound and popup notifications are interesting features and are the first for instant messaging clients on the iPhone.

Based on the screenshots below the UI looks quite neat; however I would like to see IMs for the iPhone to support all IM protocols such as AIM/iChat, MSN, Yahoo!, GoogleTalk, ICQ, IRC and Jabber along with account management enabling single sign-on across these IM protocols.

If you are looking to install this hack on your iPhone then you would need to get your hands dirty as they are waiting for it to be put on the installer.app directory which should make it a lot easier to install. However, if you can’t wait then you could use iBrickr (Windows) or Breezy or iFuntastic v3 (Mac) to load the MobileChat package on your iPhone.

The source code of the unauthorized instant messaging client is also available, so feel free to check it out at this link.

I guess these are still early days for such unauthorized iPhone applications; however one can expect them to evolve into products that will be as good or maybe better than the web-based IMs we have seen so far.

Please find the screenshots of the UI below:

iPhone unlocking: iPhonesimfree.com has started accepting orders for software-only iPhone hack

iPhone unlocking: iPhonesimfree.com has started accepting orders for software-only iPhone hack

As per the email they have started taking only bulk orders with pricing starting at $36 each for 50 licenses to $25 each for 5000 licenses and do not plan to sell the software-only unlocking method to end users. This is what they had to say about selling it to end users:

"Iphonesimfree.com is a wholesale only company. Although we could, we do not and will not sell directly to end users, because we want to work together with our valuable resellers as a team and not interfere in their business."

I guess it is to cover themselves from the legal hurdles which had delayed the iPhone hack from being released to the public as soon as Engadget first demonstrated the unlocking method to work on T-Mobile. So how will it all work?

"The reseller or his/her customer must install on the iphone our software, available by mail or through direct download from our site.  This is a standard .app file and once installed on the iphone it will show up as a springboard icon on the main screen.

The reseller must log into our back office and enter the required data specific to that iphone (his license credit will be substracted).

Once done, the reseller or the customer must run the .app, which will communicate via the iphone wifi to our server. If the iphone has been registered, the software will proceed to unlock the iphone."

So for the end user it would not be as simple as unlocking the iPhone themselves. They would either have to buy a new iPhone, in case, the reseller sells the unlock code only bundled with the iPhone, or buy it from one of those resellers offering the unlock service at a premium.

Here is what they have to say regarding guarantees against future updates:

"We CANNOT guarantee that this software will work after any future updates for the iphone.  It does currently work on all firmware versions, up to and including, 1.02.

We will naturally try to provide our resellers an updated version of our software for each firmware update, it is in our interest, but we do NOT guarantee that we will be able to do so.

The delivery date for the unlocking software is September 4th, 2007. Stay tuned @ iPhoneHacks.com for further updates on this story.
