Syphone lets you Save, Archive and View SMS messages from iPhone on your Mac

Syphone for iPhone

If you are an iPhone owner who is a heavy SMS user then you are going to like this latest utility for Mac OS X called "Syphone" which has been released by Micromat.

Syphone is a freeware which can be used to save, archive and view SMS messages from your iPhone on your Mac including those that have been deleted from the iPhone.

Micromat has been an innovator in the development of monitoring, diagnostic, troubleshooting and repair utilities for Mac. They have recently released the beta version of their first iPhone-related application called Syphone.

If you have been a heavy user of SMS on the iPhone then you must have already got the error message “Your SMS mailbox is almost full. Please delete some messages”. Though there may be enough free memory on your iPhone, Apple has put a cap on the amount of text messages that can be stored on the iPhone to 1000.

So when you hit that limit, it is a pain to figure out which messages to delete, maybe not any more as the Syphone comes to your rescue. It is a freeware which can be used to save, archive and view SMS messages from your iPhone on your Mac, even the ones that have been deleted from your iPhone.

The features of the iPhone are as mentioned below as stated on Micromat's website:

  • View synced iPhone SMS messages on your Macintosh
  • Archive SMS messages
  • Import/export SMS messages
  • View SMS messages offline in an iChat-like interface with selectable colors
  • Open Address Book contacts
  • View the number of sent and received messages for each contact
  • Supports multiple iPhones

How does it work?

I am just speculating here - iTunes creates backups of your SMS text messages, notes and call history every time you sync. It looks like the utility works on top of these backups. So it will be nice to see them extend the functionality to notes. The program installs on your Macintosh and does not alter the iPhone in any way.

This is indeed a neat utility to have if you have hit "the mailbox is almost full" error message, and you can see from the screenshot below that it also offers a cool iChat-like interface to view the SMS messages later on your Mac.

does it work with iphone 3g or is it just for iphone 2g?

I've never gotten any error messages about my SMS mailbox being full (and I've seen from software like this that I have threads with messages up in the 20 thousands…).

However, I love this kind of software. I use a newer one, Decipher TextMessage, that works with any generation iPhone. It's not a web service, so your texts are still secure on your machine. I believe they have a tool for voice mails too.
