iPhone launched in France – Unlocked iPhone for €749; Orange Offering Four Tariffs

Apple iPhone has been launched in France and is available with four tariffs plans from Orange who is Apple's exclusive carrier partner in France.

This is deviating from the strategy followed by Apple's other exclusive carriers partners such as AT&T in US, O2 in UK or T-Mobile in Germany who are offering iPhone with only a single tariff plan.

There are some interesting details that Orange has put in the fine print. More details and the tariffs available after the jump.

Orange, Apple's exclusive carrier partner in France will sell unlocked iPhones for €749, far less than the €999 that T-Mobile charges in neighboring Germany. The price falls to €399 if you take one of the special iPhone airtime contracts of at least one year from Orange.

The four "Orange for iPhone" tariffs plans for those looking to buy the most hyped gadget ever created in France are as mentioned below:

  1. €49 for 4 hours of calls (2 hours peak + 2 hours off-peak and weekend) and 50 free SMS and 10 hours of free Wi-FI access to Orange hotspots.
  2. €59 for 6 hours of calls (3 hours peak + 3 hours off-peak and weekend) and 100 free SMS and 10 hours of free Wi-FI access to Orange hotspots.
  3. €79 for 4 hours of calls (5 hours peak + 5 hours off-peak and weekend) and 150 free SMS and 10 hours of free Wi-FI access to Orange hotspots.
  4. €119 for 4 hours of calls (8 hours peak + 8 hours off-peak and weekend) and 1000 free SMS and 100 hours of free Wi-FI access to Orange hotspots.

For customers signing up for only one year contracts will have to pay an additional €4.50 a month. Orange will also unlock the iPhones sold with an airtime contract, the fee is €100 during the first six months, but after that, as per the French law it will unlock phones for free.

Some of the debatable points that are covered in the fine print are:

  • Strictly forbids reading newsgroups
  • Forbids making VoIP (voice over IP) calls
  • String forbids sharing files over peer-to-peer services
  • Using the iPhone as a modem with a notebook PC.

Orange also warns that it may limit traffic above 500MB per month, or around 1MB of data for every waking hour.

Orange has also reported that around 63,000 visitors to the Orange iPhone Web site have signed up to receive information by e-mail.

I am in favour of have more than one option to choose as iPhone owners can select the tariff that best suits their usage as well as the option to unlock the iPhone for a more reasonable premium of €350 instead of €600 that T-Mobile is charging customers in Germany though its still high as compared to the unlocked iPhone available on eBay by some of the unauthorized resellers (so iPhone hackers your services are still required).

However, I am against the limit on traffic, for smartphones like the iPhone it should be unlimited.

It will be interesting to see if the unlocked iPhones will work on networks outside of France it would then for those willing to pay that extra amount it will become a viable alternative rather than going through the trouble of going through the vicious cycle you need to go through every time Apple releases a firmware update.

Let me know your thoughts on the range of tariff offered by Orange in France as well as some of stuff in the fine print.

    Wow!

And I thought US cell companies were tightwads. Those rate plans make the AT&T look like a super good deal (which I don't quite think it is.)

Wanna see even worse? Go check the plans in Canada. We pay $60 for 4mb of data, 4 freakin megabytes. We get raped over here and thats why iPhone wont be released.

I noticed lately that there hasn't been any news or somebody having problems with the latest IPHONE FIRMWARE 1.1.2. I'm just curious to know. I had my IPHONE jailbreak and installed a lot of goodies (thanks to all the hacker community). Would it be safe to upgrade to firmware 1.1.2 now? I love all the goodies but I noticed that every time I run any application there seems to have a hick-up when it runs and have to re-start the application 3 times and it'll work smoothly.

Bourne, turn off Dim Wallpaper in your Summerboard Prefs and your application problems will go away. Also, although I'm on 1.1.2 I'd say that's it's not worth the move as the only real decent fix over 1.1.1 is the SMS shortcode enablement and that can be added though Installer (SMS Fix at i.unlock.no) to older phones.

Matt, thanks for the tip. It works great! By the way my name is Romeo not Bourne.

Unlimited when using Orange hotspots… What about all the other free ones? Presumably it still has open wifi capabilities.
