Add any Audio file as Ringtone to your iPhone using Fission and MakeiPhoneRingtone v1.3

MakeiPhoneRingtone

One of the victims of the now in-famous iPhone firmware v1.1.1 were iPhone applications which allowed you to add custom ringtones for free or for a one-time charge. One of the popular ringtone applications that was affected was the MakeRingtoneMaker.

Now that you can once again add custom ringtones to the your iPhone for free with the latest firmware i.e. v1.1.2 and iTunes v7.5, makers of MakeRingtoneMaker, Roge Amoeba have released the updated version of their Ringtone application so that it works with iPhone firmware v1.1.2.

The latest version of MakeiPhoneRingtone v1.3 makes use of the simple hack of renaming the m4a file extension to m4r which is again working with iTunes v7.5 and iPhone Firmware v1.1.2. MakeiPhoneRingtone can be particularly useful when you want to add more than one song as your ringtone, as instead of doing the process of renaming the extention manually for each song it will do that automatically for you.

All you need to do is drop any AAC file onto its icon and the iPhone Applications processes your audio and adds it to iTunes, from where you can sync it back to your iPhone.

It is important to note here that as mentioned in my earlier post on the hack and also confirmed by funktion, one of the readers here @ iPhone Hacks in the comments, the hack seems to work only when the length of the AAC file is not more than 40 seconds.

MakeiPhoneRingtone currently only works with AAC files, so in order to convert any audio file into a ringtone you can make use of Fission, an audio editor again from Rogue Amoeba. Fission is a streamlined audio editor designed to get you editing in minutes. Fission lets you copy, paste and trim audio, as well as split files, all with no quality loss and more importantly convert any audio file into an AAC file which can then be added as a ringtone using MakeiPhoneRingtone.

It would have been great if all this can be done in just one application, however I am sure folks at Rogue Amoeba are currently using a wait and watch approach as Apple could very well fix the bug again.

MakeiPhoneRingtone and Fission are currently only available for Mac OS.

For windows users, simply edit an mp3 using software like EXPStudio Audio Editor down to under 40 seconds. After that, load it into iTunes and right click the file. Select "Convert to ACC". This will dump the file in C:\user\music\itunes\itunesmusic\artist\album\*.mp3. The file will come out as *.m4a. Rename this file to *.m4r, sync, and your done! Thought this might help.

While that worked for Windows, it doesn't appear to show up on the list of Ringtones on the phone itself, but it's listed in iTunes. Weird.

  3. Leon says:

Apparently my issue was the time limit, it has to be under 30 seconds. They started showing up then.

  4. Chucky says:
