iPhone Hack: PlayStation Emulator for the iPhone released

One of the popular categories here at iPhone Hacks since the launch has been games for the iPhone. The reason for this has not been because Apple has been rolling out terrific games for their revolutionary gadget but due to the hard work put in by iPhone hacking geniuses who have brought us the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) emulator and more recently ScummVM, the emulation engine that allows you to play popular LucasArts and Sierra games on the iPhone.

The good news on the native iPhone games continues as MacNN has reported recently that one of the independent software developer, ZodTTD, has released the first public version of the Playstation (PS1 or PSX) emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Playstation 1 (PS1 or PSX) emulator for the iPhone will allow iPhone owners to play playstation games on Apple's iPhone.

The developer has been able to get this working on the iPhone by converting images from PS1 discs to ISO, IMG, BIN, Z or ZNX formats.

MacNN also reports that "Users can also increase the performance of the emulator by installing a specific PlayStation BIOS file, and executing hidden commands to increase the clock cycle and/or speed of their handhelds."

If you not convinced then you can watch the YouTube video of Tekken 3 running on the iPhone below. Please note that there is no confirmation as yet if it is possible to play the game yet as the video only shows the game running on the iPhone and not being played.

However, one thing that the Playstation emulator for the iPhone highlights is that it is possible to run 3D on the iPhone works surprisingly well which is great news for iPhone owners as one can expect big things when the official SDK is released by Apple in Feb.

If you are interested in installing the PS1 emulator on the iPhone, you can check out this post published by the developer, ZodTTD or alternatively if you are looking for simpler instructions then you can follow this link for a detailed tutorial published by slevytam, one of the readers @ Tuaw on how to get this up and running on your iPhone.

The Playstation 1 emulator works on both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
