Native iPhone Application: Give your iPhone running Firmware 1.1.4 a Face-Lift with Customize

I have seen quite a few comments from iPhone Hacks readers since the release of iPhone firmware 1.1.4, on how they would love to get Customize, a native third-party iPhone application, to work on their Jailbroken iPhone.
Surprisingly and my apologies I had not even reviewed the native iPhone application which seems to be quite popular. So when iPhone Hacks reader, CerealKiller, sent me an email on the YouTube video that he had created which gives a step-by-step guide on how-to get Customize to work with iPhone firmware 1.1.4, I knew it was the perfect time to introduce you to Customize at least those of you who did not know about it and at the same time give the good news to those who wanted to get it working with latest iPhone firmware.
CerealKiller had also given us a useful tip on how to add custom ringtones for free to the iPhone.
Update (10th March):
CerealKiller has some good news for us, he has found another solution to get Customize to work with iPhone Firmware 1.1.4. Updated video guide available after the jump.
Customize in one line, is a native third-party iPhone application to help you take Control of your iPhone. Its seems like a nifty application to give your iPhone a face-lift.
Customize allows a vast amount of customization options for the iPhone (works for iPod Touch as well). The customization options range from carrier images, Wi-Fi icons, the sliders, sounds, the keypad, ability to change the icon display order and lots more.
The good thing about the ability to change display order feature is that you can choose which icons appear where which means it allows you to put whatever applications you use mostly on the first screen.
You can check out some screenshots of the native iPhone application below which should also give you a good idea on the things that you can change with Customize:
However, like all native iPhone applications to install Customize you will need to first jailbreak your iPhone. For all those who are new to the iPhone hacking world and wondering what is JailBreaking then here is some information which will help.
When you want to customize your iPhone to add custom ringtones, change wallpaper, or install unauthorized third-party applications on your iPhone, you need to perform a task called "jailbreaking". In essence it opens up your iPhone's file system so it can be accessed from your computer.
If you plan to jailbreak your iPhone then you can checkout the post I had published yesterday: Step-By-Step Guide to JailBreak iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 using ZiPhone and to Fix the YouTube Problem (which will also install the cool Installer App).
Once you have a Jailbroken iPhone, you can check out the cool YouTube video by iPhone Hacks reader CerealKiller below which shows you how to get Customize working with iPhone firmware 1.1.4. It seems a little tedious, but hey I am sure if you can get your favorite iPhone application to work then you won't be complaining:
I haven't tried this out yet so it will great to know if the video demonstration has helped you get Customize working on iPhone firmware 1.1.4 and if yes don't forget to drop in a thank you note in the comments below to your fellow reader who has made it possible.
In case you face any issues do mention it in the comments as based on past experience CerealKiller has been quite prompt in responding to issues readers had faced with the earlier tip he had given on adding custom ringtones to the iPhone for free.
CerealKiller on behalf of fellow readers (me included ofcourse) thanks a ton for the awesome YouTube video, appreciate the effort.
If you are wondering why the native iPhone application is not working for iPhone firmware 1.1.4 and you need to use a workaround to get it to work then this last message from the developer of Customize on 27th Feb a day after the release of 1.1.4 should provide you with the reason:
"Development is being put on hold until the SDK is released and Customize can be programmed right."
You can get more details on Customize from the native iPhone application's website. It will be interesting to see if Apple will make it easier for developers to develop Apps to customize the iPhone just like applications such as Customize have been able to achieve, when they reveal more details on the much awaited iPhone SDK tomorrow.
Update (10th March):
CerealKiller has some good news for us, he has found another solution to get Customize to work with iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 after the modded version of "Customize" he had mentioned in his step-by-step video guide was deleted. He has been able to findanother Repository for Customize after a lot of searching and he has been kind enough to update the video as well for us. I have updated the YouTube video above accordingly. Thanks a ton CerealKiller for figuring out a solution, you are a star!
Folks, it will be great if you can let us know if the latest instructions have helped in the comments (especially those readers who were facing the problem).

I ALWAYS GET "MAIN SCRIPT EXECUTION FAILED" WHEN DOWNLOADING THE MODDED CUSTOMIZE
Posted by: MAGNUM | March 05, 2008 at 02:37 PM
After editing the .plist packet and trying to install customized with installer I get an error message. It reads customized only works with versions 1.1.[123]. Anyone know how to fix this?
Posted by: conoven | March 05, 2008 at 03:20 PM
Hey Magnum,
Here is a tip posted by iPhone hacks reader, Eeeee to solve the error you are getting:
"For the main script error... ssh as root to your iphone:
chmod ug+s /Applications/Installer.app/Installer"
Hope it helps.

Hey conoven,
I am sure you have done this, but thought I should check.
If you follow the instructions by CerealKiller, you need to install "Customize" twice:
The first time you need to install the original Customize app under Utilities to create the folder and then uninstall it.
The second time to install the modded version of Customize under Dlubbat's Apps which I think uses the modified plist.
Let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the appreciation! I hope I can provide some assistance, I will try to answer any questions asked!

If you want this to do this on windows then when you are looking at the plist file in your file program not when you move to your desktop, right click and press edit. This will bring up the coding where you can make the changes. .plist is a mac os file type and wont work on a windows

just followed instructions again. Got all the way where you say to download customize 1.1.3 for dlubbat apps. When i press install on that it say " error: package download failed!..
Posted by: joshua | March 05, 2008 at 09:18 PM
i think there might be a problem with customize source.
Posted by: joshua | March 05, 2008 at 09:21 PM
Let me check if it is still on his source code, if not, then I will post another code to use for the modded download. People who have commented from youtube said this mod works fine but let me check on it.
Posted by: CerealKiller | March 05, 2008 at 09:23 PM
i have been able to download apps so far but not customize using your method.. still getting hung up
Posted by: joshua | March 05, 2008 at 10:22 PM
The firmware change worked. The "Dlubbat's apps" and "Dlubbat's Themes" categories loaded in installer after i added the source. The only problem i am having now is that i can not download the modified version of Customize. I followed all of the directions perfectly and when i try to install the Modified version of Customize it says "Error - Package download failed!" Then my installer app will not allow me to download anything else unless i reinstall the un-modded version and uninstall it. Help...Please...

I'm having the same problem.... I get the "Error - Package download failed!" screen, then I have to completely shut my iPhone down before I can do anything with installer again. I'm using an iPhone (1.1.4) that was hacked with ZiPhone. I'm just happy to see that i'm not completely stupid and other people are having the same problem as me. I really hope that I can get this program to work!!

yea I'm having the same problem with downloading the package
Posted by: theChamp | March 06, 2008 at 06:21 AM
Hi CerealKiller. I followed your steps from the YouTube video and when I open the SystemVerision.pllst all i get is the following:
PrdouctBuildVersion 4A102
ProductCopyright 1983-2007 Apple Inc
Based On Tahoe4A86
ProductName OSX
Product Verision 1.1.4
I don't get that file to change the string like it shows in the video. Can you by chance help me and let me know where I have gone wrong? Thank You. Thom

" error: package download failed!..": The XML on the dlubbat.com source points to a URL (http://www.touchrepo.com/Apps/Customize.app.zip) that is not valid or the file is no longer available. The only related URL on that server was http://www.touchrepo.com/Apps/CustomizeC2.app.zip but after I downloaded it, the site no longer responds. I installed this CustomizeC2.app but it does not run on my 1.14. I guess the only other thing to do is to wait until the developer finishes the modified version with the official SDK release.
BTW: if you keep on getting the same error on other downloads, remember to clear you download queue, otherwise the Customize app problem will prevent further downloads.

To Iphonehacks,
Well I would try the steps you mentioned but I cant even get that far it gives me an error message every time i try to download the customize app the first time. I am thinking about doing a clean restore once I get home and trying it again. Also my iphone has become sluggish since I have tried this, and it just turns off randomly, but I'll keep everyone posted on this....
Posted by: conoven | March 06, 2008 at 09:00 AM
I am trying to find a different source code, if I can't then I will take my file, package it and make my own, give me a little bit to sort this out, I will also update the youtube video.

Thank you cerealKiller. I really appreciate it
