iPhone Hack makes Dual-booting possible on the iPhone
You might be aware of dual-booting in the PC world where you can install multiple operating systems on a computer, and be able to choose which one to boot when switching on the computer power eg. Mac OS X or Windows on Intel-based Macs.
The iPhone hacker Jonathan “NerveGas” Zdziarski has released a hack that makes dual-booting possible even on the iPhone.
NerveGas has revealed that the iPhone Dev Team has been using the dual-booting hack to jailbreak the iPhone for several months now and since they now have several advanced techniques (still private) he felt it was the appropriate time to share it with lesser mortals like us.
This is quite a cool hack for those who would like to dual boot multiple versions of the iPhone software and especially useful for developers who want to play with iPhone firmware 1.2 which is currently a development version and hence appears to disable the radio (read you can't make phone calls).
However, the hack is currently only for the technically inclined as it requires some command line work and as you would expect also involves creating partitions on your iPhone.
You can check out this link for the step-by-step guide to boot multiple iPhone firmware versions on your iPhone.
Here is the disclaimer from NerveGas before you go ahead and try out this iPhone hack:
"The following instructions can result in PERMANENT, IRREPARABLE DAMAGE to your iPhone. This information is provided WITH NO WARRANTIES. All liability is DISCLAIMED.
In all reality, using 'restore' should fix any problems, but if it doesn't then this clever disclaimer ensures that it's not my fault."
If you have got this to work it will be great to know your experience/feedback or if you have a tip for fellow readers on the latest iPhone hack in the comments.
Nervegas was also credited for the last iPhone hack which gives you the ability to tether the iPhone to use its EDGE network from your laptop to surf the internet.
