Web App: Create and Add Custom Ringtones to your Phone using Audiko

One of the popular hacks for the iPhone has been to add custom ringtones to the iPhone for free. We have seen that since the launch of the iPhone this process which used to be a very cumbersome experience has got easier with time with either the help of iPhone Applications or by tweaking some of the advanced settings or just by simply changing the file extension from AAC m4a to m4r.

I stumbled upon this cool web application called Audiko which lets you grab audio tracks from your hard drive or the Web so that you can customize them to be used as custom ringtones on your iPhone.

With the launch of iTunes 7.4, Apple provided iPhone users the ability to add custom ringtones to their iPhone for an additional cost of 99c for a song if you already have it and in case you don't then the cost of adding a ringtone for $1.98.

We have also seen programs like iToner for Mac and iPhone RingToneMaker for Windows for Windows which make it very easy to add unlimited custom ringtones to your iPhone, however each of these applications charge you a one-time fee.

We also have some free iPhone applications like SendSong  which have been very popular with iPhone owners, however it means that you need to Jailbreak iPhone and add the native iPhone applications which can be a deal breaker for folks not so technically inclined.

Audiko is the first web based application that I have come across which makes the process of creating ringtones for the iPhone hassle-free.

Once you go to their website, you can start creating a ringtone from your favorite song immediately as there is no registration required. You have an option to either create a ringtone from a song on your hard disk or by providing the URL of the song.

Audiko in turn layers the song on one timeline, while giving you a magnified area for each minute of the song so that you can select up to a 40-second ringtone from the segment of your choice. The entire editor is overlaid on a waveform of the song, with options available so that you can also customize the ringtone to have fade in and fade out.

When you are done creating your ringtone you have three download options, one of which is to to download the .m4r iPhone-compatible ringtone. All you need to do is drag your newly created ringtone to the "ringtones" library in iTunes so that it gets synced to your iPhone when you connect it next time. Once synced to the iPhone you can select the custom ringtone as your default ringtone.

That means that whenever the latest annoying song like “Who Let The Dogs Out” gets popular, it will be even easier for people to make it their ringtone. I guess not every iPhone Application or hack is for the better.

Check out Audiko by following this link and as always do let us know if you like this application to create and add custom ringtones for free.
