RipDev reveal How-To Take Screenshots using iPhone SpringBoard's hidden feature

It has been more than 8 months since Apple iPhone's launch and in this short journey we have already seen some gems (hacks) from the iPhone hacking community.

Today's hack is to introduce you to yet another gem for all those iPhone owners who want to make the best gadget ever created even better.

Folks at RipDev have figured out a hidden feature in the iPhone's SpringBoard (home screen) to take screenshots without the need of any third-party native iPhone applications.

Erica who speaks about this hack over at Tuaw comments that "A lot of iPhone dev types have known about the SBMobileScreenshotr preference for a very long time. What we didn't know was how to make it do anything".

Folks at RipDev have figured out exactly what can be done though as they explain that "after setting a specific variable in the SpringBoard preferences file, you're able to take screenshots of anything, including the Lock screen".

However like most iPhone hacks this one will also need a Jailbroken iPhone with the cool Installer app installed. If you want to jailbreak your iPhone you can check out this post: Step-By-Step Guide to JailBreak iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 using ZiPhone.

On your Jailbroken iPhone which has Installer app, you need to follow these simple steps:

  • Add http://repository.ripdev.com/ to Installer.app if you haven't already (for this start up the Installer app, click on the "Sources" button on the bottom right, then hit "Edit" in the upper right corner, you should see the "Refresh" button replaced with the "Add" button in the upper left corner, hit that and enter the URL provided).
  • After the repository is successfully installed, you can install Apple Screenshot Enabler from the RiP Dev category.

Thats it! You should now be able to take screenshots from your iPhone.

To take a screenshot, hold down Home (Menu) button on the iPhone and toggle the Mute button. The screen will flash and the screenshot will be saved to the Camera Roll.

The screenshot images will appear in "Photos" so you can instantly share them just like any other picture.

Thanks RipDev, this is just awesome!

As always do let me know how well this hack worked for you or in case you have any tips to share for fellow readers.
