HWPen - Native Handwriting Recognition iPhone App Released

We had heard rumors that Apple was looking to put handwriting recognition into the iPhone based on a Handwriting Recognition Engineer job listing on Apple's site.

If the rumor becomes a reality then that would be awesome, but for now we don't not need to wait for Apple to release an application as an enterprising Chinese developer has released a native handwriting recognition application for the iPhone in both Latin and Chinese alphabets.

The handwriting recognition iPhone application is dubbed “HWPen” and has been developed by Hanwang.com.cn. It appears that the motivation behind HWPen was to allow Chinese character input on the iPhone, but the program works with English input as well.

After the native iPhone app is installed, it will give you a writing area that can take over the standard keyboard at the touch of a button at the lower left corner as can be seen in the screenshots below.

If you want to checkout HWPen then you will need to first jailbreak your iPhone just like other native iPhone applications. You can check out these posts on how to jailbreak your iPhone: ZiPhone 3.0: New version of Popular tool to JailBreak and Unlock iPhone Released or iLiberty: Easy to use Application to JailBreak, Activate and Unlock iPhone.

If you have used any one of the methods mentioned above then it should have also installed the Installer app which needs to be used to add the source: iphonecake.com/src/all.

Here are the simple steps you need to follow:

  • Launch the Installer app by tapping its icon on your iPhone's home screen.
  • Tap “Sources” button.
  • Then tap “Edit” in the upper-right corner.
  • And tap “Add” in the upper-left corner.
  • Enter the URL of the HWPen source: iphonecake.com/src/all
  • Press “OK”
  • Installer app will add the source, and you will be able to find HWPen in the normal “Install” menu.

Based on initial user feedback; it appears that the application which is currently in beta still needs a bit of tweaking when it comes to recognizing Western characters.

What you think about the latest native iPhone application?
