Breaking News: O2 slashes iPhone prices to £169 in UK

UK carrier O2 has slashed prices by £100 of the lower-capacity 8 GB iPhone to £169 similar to the price cuts T-Mobile had announced in Germany a week back.

The £100 reduction by O2 is part of a limited offer until June 1st. The limited offer is only available on the 8 GB iPhone as the cost of the 16 GB iPhone is still at £329 thus making the 8 GB model a compelling option at almost half the cost of the 16 GB model.

I just checked the Apple UK store and there is no price reduction available there for the 8 GB model, so today's announcement by O2 indicates some other reason for the price cuts rather than the ones mentioned earlier.

It could be that the carriers are just clearing their slow-moving stock of the entry level iPhone with the price cuts to lower the entry barrier for all those who have been wanting to get their hands on the revolutionary mobile phone but cost was a barrier.

What do you think?
