iPhone related News from Apple's Earnings Call
Apple’s posted a very strong March Quarter 2008 and seems to have beaten street expectations. One of the things we look for in any announcement from Apple is if there was a mention of the iPhone.
iPhone was mentioned quite a few times during Apple's earnings conference call. All details available after the jump.
Apple sold 1.7 million iPhones last quarter, versus consensus of 1.45 million (upside surprise). They are quite confident of selling 10 million iPhone by the end of this year as they had projected before the launch of the iPhone.
They did give some explanation for the shortage of iPhones seen in US. Apparently they expected iPhone sales to decline more than it did and hence outstripped supply (fair enough). They also think it is because more iPhones are being bought in the US to be unlocked, they view this as a proxy for the worldwide demand for the iPhone and are working to roll it out in more geographies this year. They have confirmed that they will be launching the iPhone in more European countries and expect to release the iPhone in Asia (no details on which ones) later in the year (so the rumors of a launch in India in September could become a reality).
Apple also reported that there has been an overwhelming developer response to iPhone's SDK with more than 200k+ downloads. They are also seeing a lot of interest in iPhone enterprise beta program with 1 out of 3 Fortune 500 companies interested. They expect to release iPhone firmware 2.0 in June and as you would expect do not plan to charge for it.
Apple also commented on the price cuts seen in Europe when they were asked "Who bears cost on iPhone price cuts in Europe?". They clarified that the carrier partners were free to price the iPhone as low as they wanted, however did not divulge any further details nor did they comment on the iPhone demand in Europe (I guess that means its not as good as they would like it to be as if it were they would have shouted out loud about it).
And probably the most important part of the earnings call everyone was waiting for (at least the iPhone fanboys) is to get some details regarding the imminent launch of the new (3G) iPhone, for which they refused to comment saying "We don't comment on new products!"
So I guess we need to wait for the WWDC in June (9th - 13th) to hear all about the new iPhone.
