We have seen some innovative native iPhone applications from iPhone developers, one of them is the Audio Recognition App called Listen developed by iPhone hacking legend Erica Sudan over at Tuaw (though unfortunately it seems like it is no longer working).
The reason for writing about "Listen" is because the native iPhone application I am going to talk about today reminded me of it.
The native iPhone Application is called ViPR and its a virtual search engined developed by Evolution Robotics.
Folks at Evolution Robotics are creating a revolutionary visual pattern recognition technology called ViPR which they plan to release as a native iPhone application in June.
They have also posted a YouTube video demonstrating their ViPR technology in action using the iPhone. In the demo video they show how you can take a photo of a Book, DVD or CD cover using iPhone's camera and then email the photo from the camera roll to their ViPR servers which in turn will perform the pattern recognition and then email back the information of the Book, DVD or CD.
They have used the Finding Nemo DVD cover as an example in their demo with the email returning back a description, YouTube video link and iTunes Music store links.
You can checkout the YouTube video of ViPR in action below:
I expect that in its final version as a native iPhone application, ViPR will give you the details of an image without the need to use iPhone's email capabilities.
Though it seems quite impressive, frankly I don't see myself using the native iPhone application to find out details of a book, DVD or CD cover as I can easily Google for the details, but it can definitely be used to show it off to your friends and colleagues to get the wow effect.
I think folks at Evolution will have a winner if they can implement a solution similar to what Tagcow offers; i.e. the ability to add descriptive and people tags (or meta data) to your photos taken using your iPhone's camera "auto-magically." (even though its not real-time as this one)
What do you think?
