Apple iPhone SDK Beta 5 Released; included iPhone firmware 2.0 reveals “Push” preferences

Apple has released the new version (beta 5) of their iPhone SDK. The new beta build is called 5a274D.

This is the fourth release after the iPhone SDK was released in March, details of the other three beta versions is available here, here and here.

Some interesting details of the latest beta version of Apple's iPhone SDK available after the jump.

The latest iPhone SDK updates includes API changes and apparently the AddressBook API has been revised quite significantly. There are also changes in the OpenGL-related components including Electronic Arts Embedded Apple Graphic library (EAGL).

The graphic changes indicate that many of the applications might need to re-written in case iPhone developers want to make use of the new libraries.

The pre-release version of iPhone firmware 2.0 included in the latest iPhone Software Development Kit has revealed a preference panel that allows users to control settings for applications with push capabilities.

The current iPhone firmware (i.e. 1.1.4) allows iPhone users users with push Yahoo! Mail accounts, the ability to select or deselect the “Use Push Mail” setting.

As you can seen in the screenshot below, in the new “Fetch New Data” preference panel one can choose between Every 15 mins, 30 mins and hourly or also turn it off. So with the new preference panel iPhone users will now be able to conserve their iPhone's battery life by checking for network updates less frequently or turn it off completely.

This should probably help iPhone users to controls push capabilities for not only Exchange and Yahoo! Mail accounts but also future Apple or official third-party applications that support push.

The pre-release version of iPhone firmware 2.0 has already revealed quite a few hidden features:

EAGL would be "Embedded Apple Graphics Library" not "Electronic Arts Graphics Library"
The last thing Apple needs is to steal EA's technology. :-P
