iPhone developer Errrick has just released a native P2P file sharing client called iSlsk for jailbroken iPhones that works with the Soulseek network.
It appears to be the first useful native peer-to-peer application developed for the iPhone so far.
Some background on SoulSeek: Soulseek is a unique ad-free, spyware free, and just plain free file sharing application developed by Nir Arbel, a former Napster programmer similar to others like eMule, LimeWire, and BitTorrent.
The intention of Soulseek has been to help unsigned and/or independent artists find a place in the ever-growing music industry, in a place where discussion and the creation of music can take place.
iPhone Developer Errrick created iSlsk, the new native iPhone client that works with this Soulseek network. He seems to have developed the native iPhone application by using open source version of Soulseek client for the Mac as reference.
This is what Errrick had to say "I saw all the capabilities this little gadget had and then thought ‘why didn’t someone already do something like this?’"
Once installed on your jailbroken iPhone, you will be able to search for and download files directly on your phone. You also have the option to queue transfers. The iPhone application also imports downloaded files to the iTunes library so that they can be played with native iPhone controls instantly.
You can checkout the YouTube video of iSlsk in action:
iSlsk is a native
iPhone application which means you will need a jailbroken iPhone. (You can check out one of these iPhone software on how to jailbreak your iPhone: ZiPhone 3.0 – New version of Popular tool to JailBreak and Unlock iPhone or iLiberty: Easy to use Application to JailBreak, Activate and Unlock iPhone
. ZiPhone or Liberty will also install the Installer App as part of the jailbreaking process. You can then install iSlsk via Installer app.)
Before hacking your iPhone it is a good idea to take a backup of your iPhone so you can restore it.
To install the application via the Installer you need to add "Big Boss" software repository to the Installer app. Here are the simple steps that you need to follow to achieve this:
- Launch the Installer app by tapping its icon on your iPhone’s home screen.
- Tap “Sources” button.
- Then tap “Edit” in the upper-right corner.
- And tap “Add” in the upper-left corner.
- Enter the URL of IntelliScreen source: thebigboss.org/repo.xml
- Press “OK”
- Installer app will add the source, and you will be able to find iSlsk in the normal “Install” menu.
As always, it will be great to get your feedback on iSlsk in the comments below.
