iPhone firmware 2.0 will be available on July 11; What should you do?

iPhone 3G

We have been speculating that iPhone firmware 2.0 will be available to
all iPhone users towards the end of June or early July as we were not
aware of the exact release date.

The speculations can be put to rest as the release date of the much awaited
iPhone firmware 2.0 has been revealed thanks to a tip from TUAW reader.
The source of the release date is none other than Apple’s iPhone 3G
press release which we seemed to have completely missed out.

If you are confused whether to update to the latest iPhone firmware or not then I have some advice
depending on the category of iPhone user you
fall under.

Here is the snippet from Apple’s iPhone 3G press release:

"iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers."

The question that most iPhone customers would have is: Should I update my iPhone with iPhone firmware 2.0?

The advice remains the same as it has been for any firmware update and depends on which category of iPhone user you fall under:

  • If you have not hacked or unlocked your iPhone then its a
no-brainer, you can safely go ahead and update to the latest and greatest
    firmware.
  • If you have hacked your iPhone but are more interested
in the Enterprise features or the ability to download the official
native iPhone apps or the host of interesting features that have been
revealed so far in iPhone firmware 2.0 and do not have any problem
losing all your favorite unofficial native iPhone apps then you should go ahead and update.
  • If
you have hacked your iPhone and cannot live without your favorite
unofficial native iPhone applications then it would be a good idea to
wait and see if your favorite iPhone apps are available via the iPhone
AppStore or wait for the iPhone hacking community to jailbreak the iPhone
and port your favorite iPhone apps to run on iPhone firmware 2.0.
  • If you have unlocked your iPhone to use the SIM of some
other carrier then you should ideally wait for the iPhone hacking
community to figure out a way to jailbreak and unlock iPhone firmware
2.0 as updating your unlocked iPhone with iPhone firmware 2.0 will
most probably result in bricking it and making it unusable.

Now that the options are in front of you, do let us
know which category of iPhone user you fall under and if will you be
updating to your iPhone to iPhone firmware 2.0 when it is available on July 11 and why?
