The iPhone Dev Team has just published a post claiming that they have been able to downgrade iPhone 3G's modem firmware to an older beta firmware version.
They haven't unlocked iPhone 3G so far, but the latest news gives an indication on the progress they are making hacking iPhone 3G's baseband.
The iPhone Dev Team have been able to downgrade iPhone 3G's modem firmware to an older beta firmware version by hacking its baseband so that it allows them to circumvent security checks and enables them to flash iPhone 3G with an older disallowed firmware.
They have clarified that they have not disassembled or modified the iPhone to achieve this. They have also published a screen shot (as seen below) of the "About" screen from the iPhone 3G that was hacked to run the older beta firmware.
The iPhone Dev Team have been working hard to unlock the iPhone 3G using a software method, after releasing the Pwnage Tool 2.0.x for Mac users and WinPwn 2.0.0.x for Windows users to jailbreak iPhone 3G and jailbreak, unlock and activate the first generation iPhone last week.
They believe this is a major milestone in their objective to unlock iPhone 3G.
