Step-by-Step Guide to Pwn first generation iPhone running firmware 2.0 using Windows

The iPhone Dev Team released their Pwnage Tool 2.0 to jailbreak and unlock the first generation (original) iPhone running iPhone firmware 2.0 yesterday, but only Mac users could use the tool as they are yet to release the WinPWN tool for Windows users.

URherenow and Srini, one of the readers here at iPhone Hacks readers seems to have figured out a way tipped us about a way to pwn his the first generation iPhone running iPhone firmware 2.0 using Windows.

So check out the step-by-step guide to pwn the first generation iPhone after the jump.

Below are the step by step instructions, Windows users need to follow (if you are a Mac user, follow this link):

Step 1: Use WinPWN 1.0 To PWN Your 1.1.4 iPhone. You can download WinPWN from this link. WinPWN will ask for an IPSW you should use the 1.1.4 IPSW. Download iPhone firmware 1.1.4 from this link.

Step 2: Install BootNeuter (Available Via Installer use the old 1.0 version it basically preps the phone).

Step 3: Run BootNeuter and have it Neuter your iPhone.

Step 4: Make sure your iTunes version is at 7.7.

Step 5: Grab a pre-created IPSW Made with PWNAGE 2.0 Mac. If you don’t have one made you can grab one from this link.

Step 6: Grab ZiPhone to get into Recovery Mode easily. You can download the latest version of ZiPhone from here.

Step 7: Run ZiPhone & jump your iPhone into NORMAL Recovery mode
(available via advanced settings area in ZiPhone) — This is the most
straightforward way to get it into the proper restore mode.

Step 8: In iTunes Shift+Click the Restore button and find your custom IPSW firmware file.

Step 9: Wait for the restore to complete. — You should see bootneuter
automatically come up.

This should jailbreak, unlock and activate your first generation iPhone and should have iPhone firmware 2.0 running on it so that you can use both the official and unofficial native iPhone applications.

Please do remember, hacking your iPhone is at your own risk. Please don’t forget its always a good idea to backup your iPhone.

Let us know if it worked for you in the comments, and if it has, don’t forget to drop in a thank you note to your fellow reader (SriniΒ ) who has made it possible.

Thanks a ton to Srini for posting the excellent step-by-step guide in the comments and URherenow for being the first to tell us about it and special thanks to folks at for figurint it out in the first place.

Update 1: This method works with the first generation (original) iPhone and not iPhone 3G. I have also updated the post to say first generation iPhone to avoid any further confusion.

Update 2: I had missed out URherenow’s comment while publishing the original post, I have updated the post accordingly. The source of the guide seems to be the clever folks at URherenow, sorry about that and thanks again for the tip.

Thanks for an easy step by step guide! Btw i have a question, can this guide be used on iPhone 3G also or only older devices? as its mentioned in the heading:

"Step-by-Step Guide to Pwn original iPhone running firmware 2.0 using Windows"? as orignal iPhone running firmware 2.0 is iPhone 3G?

  • Zohaib

    Hey there,

Just wondering, how can one backup their full iphone before hacking it to firmware 2.0. I want to do a full backup including address book contacts, photos, and notes and etc.

If you have the answer please post it as i want to be on the safe side before doing this πŸ™‚

im doing it now. thanks in advance.

to back everything up, just sync with itunes. make sure you check off the sync options (outlook or windows contacts)

  • Hey Folks,

This method works with the first generation (original) iPhone and not iPhone 3G. I have also updated the post to say first generation iPhone to avoid any further confusion.

Hi πŸ™‚ Thought you might be interested in this. I posted this on the iphong dev blog site but might be helpful for you here as well.

iPhone 2.0 Upgrade Steps for 2G iPhones ACCIDENTALLY Upgraded to 2.0 already.

Follow and check all steps and all will work.

    === Pre-upgrade Checks ===
    1. Restore your iPhone with the Original & Official Apple iphone 2.0 software.
    2. Phone will be "emergency" only status.

    === Device Support Folder ===
    1. Open Finder
    2. Goto "Mac HD"
    3. Goto "Library" and then to "Itunes"
    4. If "Device Support" EXISTS – open folder and delete everything in there.
    5. If "Device Support" folder doesn't exist – create a new folder called "Device Support"

    === Download Bootloaders ===
    1. You need both 3.9 and 4.6 (available via 100s of links on this page – particularly at the top)

    === Upgrade Steps ===
    1. Open up the pwned 2.0
    2. Goto EXPERT MODE – if you use simple mode you will get errors 6, 20, 1600, 1601 etc and it will NOT work
    3. Select the 2.0 firmware and also select relevant *.bins
    4. When get to main menu screen, go into Bootnetuer and select "Update Bootloader" and select "4.6"
    5. Go back to main menu and enter General Settings –> select Enable Baseband Update
    6. Then build the firmware and save it to your desktop
    7. Once the firmware is built, pwned will ask you to plug in your iphone via USB.
    8. It will then step you through the process of enter DFU mode
    9. Once this is complete it will ask you to boot up itunes (when you plugged you phone in it may have already loaded)
    10. Hold down ALT (on MAC) and select the firmware on your desktop
    11. iPhone will update – LEAVE IT for the entire process.
    12. It should install and all will work πŸ™‚

    === If DFU Fails ===
    1. Plug iPhone into USB & then TURN OFF (connected obviously :P)
    2. Hold the power and home buttons at the same time for 10 secs
    3. Release power button and continue holding home button
    4. iTunes will recognize the phone in "Restore Mode"
    5. Hit "Option/ALT" key and click restore.
    6. Select the firmware on your desktop
    7. Await 2.0 love (feel free to drink a beer at this point)

Hope this is all clear enough for everyone πŸ™‚

  • RL

Could someone please give a step by step how to do this with iphone 3g? I see the first step here is to WinPWN 1.0 To PWN Your 1.1.4 iPhone, but the 3g is already at 2.0 firmware. Help??? THanx

  • Hey RL,

The Pwnage Tool 2.0 cannot unlock iPhone 3G, the iPhone Dev Team are currently working on it.

If you are looking to unlock iPhone 3G, you need to wait for the iPhone Dev Team to release their updated tool which works with iPhone 3G.

  • marvin -philippines

hey thanks.. it working in my phone 1.1.4, now im using pwnage 2.0 thanks a lot..

  • RL

iphonehacks. I just want to have the "installer" on my 3g. Don't need to "unlock."

  • Rohit

  • Aaron

just done it worked fine for me it installed cydia not so will have to get to grips with that as i have only used but apart from that all ok and thanks all who put work in to this

un need to leave it on 1.1.4and do the "Pwn" hope that helps mate

  • T. Payne

leave it at 1.1.4 then PWN it

  • binebine

It worked great! Thanks. I wish you had more details in the steps…but guessed a lit here and there and it worked.
    Thanks a great deal.

  • Kevin

can you pwn with 1.1.3 instead of 1.1.4?

  • Dan

Uploading the 2.0 Custom firmware on rapidshare as we speak.

But i was wondering if any windows user has done it and if they would like to share that if it worked for them or not.

  • Chris

How would i go about doing this if i'm already at 2.0 on my original iPhone. And i'm using Windows so i cant just use the new pwnage tool. Thanks!

  • aerobic247

this worked a treat i was about to install os x leopard in my eee pc just so i could Pwn my iphone till i found this.

  • Mike

All I want to do is jailbreak/activate (No Unlock), how would i do this? Would I just not run boot nueter?

  • Hey URherenow,

Sorry about that I had missed out URherenow's comment while publishing the original post. I have updated the post accordingly.

Thanks a ton for the tip.

  • hounddog

This worked great will keep informed as I use it more. Easy to do just follow directions

  • Jamille

I agree with Chris. How could you tell us to pwn 1.1.4 when we've already updraded to 2.0. Makes no sense!

  • Zohaib Danish

you dont have to pwn or neuter it. i just plugged it in my itunes, hold shit and clicked restore, selected the 2.0 custom firmware and thats it everything was done by itself. you dont even have to put it in resotre mode or anything. everything is backed up, except for notes.

  • engla001

Last step…Where I am in iTunes and select the downloaded 2.0 ipsw… iTunes crashes and says "Unknown Error 13" and my phone becomes a brick….Anyone know how to help me?

  • Hi Guys,
It Worked 100% for me. I had iPhone on 1.1.4 Unlocked with ZiPhone with BL 3.9.

The WinPWN site was down so I just did a search on Google with:

At first I mixed up the process by doing Step 2 and 3 and then did Step 1. The I jumped to Step 4 and onwards.

The whole process plus the downloads took me about an hour.

Thank you VERY MUCH for the great Tutorial. Just couln't wait for the WinPWN 2.0

One more Happy iPhone owner in Bulgaria.

P.S. Accually the did crash on loading but that's the only thing. I cannot delete the GMail account in the setting either. But that's the only thing

  • Greg P

Wait…it worked…no way dude…let's make love baby because you're awesome.

  • Wico360

    Thanks for the Instructions! πŸ˜‰

I have the 1 Gen Iphone with jailbroken 1.1.1
an I am stuck on how to move up in firmwares please help???????My email is

  • QuadeP

I tried to open-ssh into the phone and that worked. I got the and put that in the applications folder. Restarted the phone and now i have the installer icon but when I start it, it just loads the white page and restarts. I think that the problem is that I am missing the other files that are needed to run installer.

  • Cristian

Hey guys, I can't find the bootneuter tool in my installer, help? where is it supposed to be?

  • Mustafa

I already had an unlocked/jailbroken 1.1.4 2G iPhone. Didn't need to rePWN it, so just Neuter'ed it @ 3.9 Bootlated using BootNeuter 1.0 from the Installer.

Upgraded to iTunes 7.7, shift-Restored to custom 2.0 IPSW… BootNeuter 2.0 just came up and it says it's Flashing Baseband.

Just got done, says successful, rebooting….

I see App Store, Cydia and T-Mobile all on the same page. Looking good πŸ™‚

  • Bob

Hi. I saw "iPhoneHacks" solution for people who are already running the 2.0 on a 1st gen iPhone, but it appears it is for mac's only. Could someone please post a way to do it via Windows?

Just to clairify, I had a 1.1.4 iPhone that was unlocked and jailbreaked. I upgraded it to 2.0 (with no trouble). Now I would like to at least unlock it. I am in Taiwan this week and would really like to use my TW SIM card.

  • Hey Bob,

This post is a workaround for Windows users to pwn their first generation iPhone running firmware 2.0, Mac users can simply use the Pwnage Tool which the iPhone Dev Team has released.

    Hope it clarifies.

  • Cristian

where do I get bootneuter! I can not find find it in the installer!

  • Cristian

Can anyone please answer my question…the only step I don't get is the bootneuter one…I don't know where to get that tool.

  • Phillip

Worked for me on my 16gb iPhone. I had updated to 2.0. So I downgraded and followed this guide using the provided links and it has worked for me 100%.

    Thanks Phil πŸ™‚

  • Question:Alreadh have Jailbroken and unlocked 2G 11.4

I already have a jailbroken and unlocked 1.14 2G phone (using first release of Pwnage tool on mac). Can I download the the 2.0 modified IPSW file and restore with itunes 7.7?

I am guessing I don't first need to upgrade to official 2.0 and then run the Pwnage 2.0 tool?

    Thanks in advance, Mandeep

  • John

Worked perfectly for me and I'm an UberNoob!

  • isd503

Thank You! It seems to have worked just fine. I followed the instructions and my G2 1.1.4 iPhone is now running 2.0 firmware. Already love the ability to move icons around on the Home screen! Thanks again!

  • el heroe

Is there any method to just jailbreak a first generation iphone to v 2.0?

  • GTR

Still waiting for the windows version to come out. Thanks for all the guides, but no installer! I would just wait.

  • Buggi

i have just made it with windows.. after several days!!(i was stupid enough to update to 2.0 the day it was relesed)
#1 first i deleted itunes 7.7(remember to rename the folder "itunes" in the folder "music" after delete, or you wil get the mesage that itunes is installed in and newer version)and then i installed 7.5
#2 then i downloadet the 1.1.4 firmware and installed it in itunes (shift+Reboot) you will get the error mesage (1601) just ignore it! an turn off itunes
#3 use ibrick to turn your iphone out of recovery mode.
#4 i know people don't like ziphone, but i used it anyway, in step 1? (jailbreak, unlock and activate)
#5 now update installer and install bootneuter. i ignored step 3?
an then just follow the wellmade guide!!

    hope it could help πŸ˜€

    BTW! thanks for the guide!!

  • Buddy Benerbs

    Steps worked flawlessly.

Not sure why anyone would want to do this… I had a ton of great apps on 1.1.4 especially the video recorder. Now I have ZERO apps on 2.0. Basically my phone looks like 1.1.4 when I bought it. Why the heck did I upgrade to 2.0???

  • BonParche

  • Ryan Richardson

Worked perfectly, thanks for the great walkthrough! πŸ™‚

  • PaulTheexplorer

Followed this guide and everything worked fine!

IMO > For the uber novice, the Bootneuter steps could do with a little more info, ie which baseband to select etc..

but other than that, a working guide.

  • yueyu

I did take my time to go through it all propperly but i am a complete novice so it can't be too hard for others. I'm running a basic windows XP laptop and my iphone first gen was unlocked/jailbroken with ziphone before hand. Thanks to whoever set this up or discovered, good work chappies =)

Need to be sure with one thing! does this custom firmware available here modify the boot logo to the pineapple?

Id rather have the default boot logo. Can that be possible? I did the same thing for a freind on his 2G Iphone with windows with another custom firmware out there.. it worked like a charm, but as I was about to do it with my… I saw his boot logo was a pineapple.

I followed the above an bootneuter didn't 'automatically come up'. I now have a restored 1.1.4, all custom apps gone.

When I ran bootneuter I set it to 3.9, neuter on, and flashed it. Anyone know what I might have missed? Should it have been 4.6?

I am not the best on this sub, but doesn't we all get the same IMEI?

  • zank

everything works fine and i have installed 2.0
but the thing is, i think 2.0 is NOT designed to work with the original iPhone because the applications takes longer time to open and to close and the phone hangs and sometimes halts.
any idea to speed things up??

    i think i'm downgrading back to 1.1.4

How do I do step 2 and 3. I dont have BootNeuter (Available Via Installer use the old 1.0 version it basically preps the phone).

Do I need to get it from some place ?

  • shanack25

    please for the step 1 , should I do a Ipwner before step 2 ? I don't understand ,thank a lot

  • Sever

It is working GREAT ! Just updated to v2.0
I would like to clarify a thing that was a little confusing for me.

Step 7: Run ZiPhone & jump your iPhone into NORMAL Recovery mode (available via advanced settings area in ZiPhone) — This is the most straightforward way to get it into the proper restore mode.

NORMAL recovery mode is simple "Recovery mode" in Ziphone (the middle button).

The first is DFU mode, then Recovery mode, then Normal mode.

In step 7 use Recovery mode.

  • Leonardo

Thanks a lot! I just did it on my IPhone and on WinXp! Worked great.. almost risked an heart attack in some moment but… Thanks a lot Srini.

  • ekse

    I have a doubt,

I used ziphone to unlock my 1.1.4 iphone.

Hence do i still need to flash the custom IPSW on 1.1.4 on my iphone?

and do i still need to run boot neuter?

or could i simply flash this custom file with iTunes 7.7?

  • Bart

    Great! you are heros!
I've already tried loads of procedures to upgrade my 1.1.4 to 2.0, without succes, and with loads of fuck ups on my iphone.

At last a method that works.

    I really appreciate it! Thanks!

  • h0mi

What does "An unknown error occurred (1604)" mean? The restore failed.

  • Jeremy

Hey I got error 6 when trying to restore it. I did not install Bootneuter, because i was using the 2.0 winpwn. Could that be the problem?

i have created my own custom ipsw’s on winpwn, i think that i have also got back to 1.1.4 from 2.0 everytime the iphone turns on i get the itunes logo with the cable, and when i restored in itunes i got a 150x error message, from this point, you’ve said to use win pwn to pwn my iphone, however when it gets to the point of pwning it says starting pwnage and doesnt do anything else, the popup comes up i click okay, and thats it, then when i try to do a custom restore, i get error message im running 7.5, is my iphone as good as a brick? please help i’ve been trying for two days, having only just bought unlocked and stupidly updating, and i go away tomorrow would realy like to have it working! thanks in advance!!!

Where are the instructions for Step-by-Step Guide to Pwn original iPhone running firmware 2.0 using a MAC.

All I can find is references to the windows article. I've downloaded some of the SW for the Mac, but can't find the Mac step by step instructions. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

I have just purchased the older version of iphone and it is running v 1.1.4. It is also jailbroken and unlocked. I spend most of my time overseas and need to be able to use different sim cards on the phone. I really want to upgrade the firmware to 2,0, but I'm afraid I won't be able to unlock and jailbreak it if I do. Has anyone had any success and confirmed that everything worked? Also, I have np idea how to start unlocking/jailbreaking the phone once it's updated. Is there a step by step website that I can go to?

Maybe not exactly on topic but it may help someone:

Yesterday I tried to do an Erase all setting and content and my battery died in the meantime. So I got a phone that was not booting (only apple logo on black screen). It took me a while to figure out how to resolve this. In itunes it was detected as a phone in recovery mode but on restore gave me the 1600,1601,1602 errors. So the problem was that is wasn't in correct DFU mode.
If you want to succeed do the folowing:

    1. Disconect the phone from the computer
    2. Reset phone by pressing Home+Power until screen goes black
    3. Release both buttons
    4. Press the Home button and keeping it pressed connect the phone to the computer
    5. Keep pressing until you se on the screen the ipod logo and the connector cable logo
    6. Now release the Home button, windows will detect it as Apple in DFU mode and itunes too.
    7. Now do a Shift-Restore from itunes with the already pwned firmware (link on top of page)

    Hope it helps,
    Thank you

PS. Thank you Dev Team for this info (it was in the winpwn help file, DFU Mode)

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me out, I have been looking all over, I had iphone with 1.1.4 and I downloaded the tool to get me 2.0, well I completed that whole thing then all the sudden it wouldn't reead my sim card anymore so I don't know if it actually gave me 2.0 b but when I restore using the 2.0 ipsw it restores, so now I need to figure out how I can get my phone unlock again, any assistance would greatly be appreciated!

  • I found out the right way to fix the issue where-in you don't get any signals on t-mobile (or any other GSM carrier) once you upgrade to firmware 2.0 and then downgrade back to 1.1.4…the detailed instructions are at :

Hi, i bought my first gen iphone from a random store in a mall the guy said it was version 1.1.2. I went home. it broke, hardware issues, so he sent it to apple and i got it back. Now he says its still 1.1.2 but in settings general about it says its 1.1.4. Is there a way i can check for sure its 1.1.4 before attempting the winpwn?

  • When you connect your iPhone to iTunes, you should be able to see the firmware version in iTunes as well (look for Software version).

But the fact that in Settings->General->About and in Version it says 1.1.4 then it is definitely 1.1.4.

But why do you want 1.1.2? The latest version is iPhone firmware 2.2 currently, 1.1.2 is quite outdated.

  • i reset my iphone 1st generation cos i could not make any calls or use my phone but could use everything else on the phone..when i reset it, it said it would take an hour to do and i waited and waited but nothing..all that happens now is an apple symbol on the phone and thats it..when i plug it into my computer it doesnt detect it at all…CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLS???
