While the iPhone Dev Team is working on their software-based unlocking method for iPhone 3G, we have news that USB Fever, a recognized vendor of iPod and iPhone accessories has already started taking pre-oders for their iPhone 3G SIM Unlock Card and plans to start shipping the hardware-based unlocking method for iPhone 3G from August 20th which will allow iPhone 3G users to use SIM from any GSM carrier.
USB Fever is a Hong Kong based vendor that sells cases, cables and other accessories for various iPhone and iPod models. Their SIM unlock method seems to be similar to the hardware-based method that some hackers from Brazil had used to unlock iPhone 3G.
USB Fever’s website claims:
“This SIM unlock is made of a very thin piece of FPC (0.10mm) with a Microcontroller mounted on, that goes between your Operator’s SIM card & the phone’s SIM socket.
Because of it’s very thin & slim design it fits into almost all phone’s on the market and can also be easily removed again. It’s got Gold Immersion and makes perfect contact with the card and the socket at ALL times.
Cutting of your Operator’s SIM card is required but kept to a minimum.
This SIM unlock is a revolutionary do-it-yourself Plug & Play card for unlocking iPhone 3G without the risk of damaging the iPhone 3G or voiding it’s warranty.
This SIM unlock is inserted into the iPhone 3G in parallel with your Operator’s SIM card and enables you to use your card on phones locked to another provider.”
As you can see from the picture below, this method needs you to also punch a hole in your SIM card for it to fit into the SIM socket.
The website appears to have already started taking pre-orders. The SIM unlock is priced at $34.99, a lot cheaper than what the Brazilian hackers were planning to sell their SIM unlock.
However, there isn’t any information available to confirm their claim, so we would advice you against it.
