Is Apple's iPhone 3G "Unslow" Ad Misleading?

iPhone 3G

Have you seen Apple's iPhone 3G "Unslow" ad which says you can do most things on the internet "twice as fast" with iPhone 3G as in comparison to the first generation iPhone?

The ad has created some controversy in the blogosphere with some folks complaining that the ad is misleading, and that it sets wrong expectations.

Check out Apple's iPhone 3G ad after the jump to see if you agree.

Jason over at 37Signals complains:

"Web pages load immediately. GPS picks up instantly. Files download about 3x faster than I’ve ever seen a file download — even over wi-fi. I don’t think standing on top of a 3G tower antenna would even deliver such an experience."

Someone has even compared the real-world performance on iPhone 3G (running on full 3G reception in Boston) with performance on the iPhone 3G in the ad (as seen below):

Jason goes on to say:

"But Unslow is about selling speed. Speed that isn’t for sale at any price. It sets the wrong expectations. It leads to a disconnect between the iPhone in the guy’s hand on TV and the iPhone in your hand. When they don’t deliver what they demonstrate people end up disappointed."

I watched the ad and frankly didn't think Apple was trying to mislead or set wrong expectations as the ad clearly states that you can do most things "twice as fast" and not super fast with iPhone 3G which is a fact not just for the iPhone 3G but any 3G smart phone if you are on a reliable 3G network.

When Apple announced iPhone 3G, I had recommended that before buying iPhone 3G one of the first things you should probably do is figure out if AT&T has 3G coverage in your area so that you have the right expectations especially if you are upgrading from the first generation iPhone running over EDGE to iPhone 3G.

What do you think? Did you buy Apple's new iPhone 3G because you saw the web pages, Google maps load so fast in the ad?
