3 million iPhone 3Gs sold in first month
Three days after iPhone 3G's launch Steve Jobs had announced that it had crossed the 1 million mark which had taken 74 days for the first generation iPhone.
According to Michael Cote, former T-Mobile executive and analyst of the Cote Collaborative, Apple has sold 3 million iPhone 3Gs defying the otherwise downward trends in consumer spending, employment levels and overall economic health.
Cote who has been extremely accurate with wireless predictions in the past reports that Apple is seeing unprecedented demand and that there is no sign of let up so far.
Fortune believes the unprecedented demand is the due to three major factors:
1. iPhone 3G costs $199 while the first generation had a price tag of $400 (this excludes the wireless subscription costs over two years). The price cuts for iPhone 3G has broadened the customer base as it has helped in reducing the entry barrier.
2. iPhone 3G has been launched in many more countries than the first generation iPhone. iPhone 3G is already selling in 22 countries and Apple will be launching it in 20 more countries on Aug 22, with a target of 70 by year end. So again a much larger customer base has helped iPhone 3G to out sell the first generation iPhone.
3. Mobile phones are very much a fashion statement these days, and iPhone's touchscreen (and lots more reasons if we may add) makes it one of the hottest mobile phones in the market.
Cote predicts that Apple will find it difficult to keep current retail stores stocked up as they continue to launch it in more countries which could ultimately impact or delay the launch of iPhone 3G in new countries.
