Apple Re-Releases iTunes 8 and Posts Few Solutions for Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD)

Apple has re-released iTunes 8 and posted few solutions for the blue screen of death (BSOD) that some 32-bit as well as 64-bit Windows Vista users were reporting each time they plugged in their iPhone or iPod Touch to iTunes 8.

Apple has mentioned that the solutions should also help those users whose computers immediately restart when they connect iPhone or iPod to their computer.

iPhone users running Microsoft Vista had reported problems almost as soon as the iTunes 8 was released for download Tuesday.

Windows experts identified an Apple-provided USB driver "usbaapl.sys" in the 32-bit version of Vista, "usbaapl64.sys" in the 64-bit edition of the operating system as the culprit for the BSOD. Windows identifies that driver as "Apple Mobile Device Support" in Vista's uninstaller.

Interestingly as per Windows blogger Ed Bott, Apple simply replaced buggy versions of usbaapl.sys and usbaapl64.sys, with older editions from a July iTunes update to re-release iTunes 8.

Computer World confirmed that a copy of iTunes 8 downloaded late Thursday, after Apple re-issued the application, installed the same older 31.2KB driver identified by Bott.

Apple has posted a support document yesterday providing few solutions to fix the BSOD issue. They are as mentioned below:

Solution 1:

Disconnect your iPhone or iPod from Windows Vista.
Uninstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support
For Classic View
Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
Select iTunes, click Uninstall.
For Control Panel Home View
Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
Select iTunes and click Uninstall.
Restart the computer.
Re-download and install the updated iTunes 8 installer from www.apple.com/itunes/download.

Important: Do not use the iTunes8Setup or iTunes864Setup file you previously downloaded. The reason for this note is Apple wants users to download the re-release version of iTunes 8.

Solution 2:

Outdated software drivers on your computer can cause strange behaviors when syncing the computer with your iPhone or iPod touch. While any driver software could be a factor, updating the software drivers for Logitech QuickCam/Webcam products, Lexmark scanners, and some built-in media card reader drivers on the computer may solve this issue in a majority of cases.

Solution 3:

Isolate the issue to see if there is a USB conflict by disconnecting other USB devices connected to the computer such as a printer, digital camera, scanner, etc.

Solution 4:

Try connecting the iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port or connect directly to the PC if using an external USB hub.
