Step-by-Step Guide to Jailbreak 1st Gen iPhone and iPhone 3G running Firmware 2.1 [Updated]

The iPhone hacking community has done it again, it has only been a few hours since Apple released iPhone firmware 2.1 which includes many bug fixes and improvements, and we have news that they have figured out a way to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.1.

ipineapple, one of our readers here at iPhone Hacks, had posted a link to a step-by-step guide to jailbreak 1st generation iPhone and iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.1 for Windows users in the comments.

Update 1:

Folks at Sleepers.net who had also posted the step-by-step guide
have just recommended to wait for some more time. There are apparently
quite a few issues that need to be fixed which the iPhone Dev Team is working on, so you are
better off waiting until the issues are fixed.

Update 2:

The ever-so dependable iPhone Dev team have released updated versions of their Pwnage and QuickPwn Tools to jailbreak and unlock the 1st Gen iPhone and jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.1 that was released by Apple only yesterday. You can read iPhone Dev Team Release PwnageTool v2.1 and QuickPwn v1.1 Which Supports iPhone Firmware 2.1 for more details.

The guide is currently only for Windows users.

The step-by-step instructions to Jailbreak 1st generation iPhone and iPhone 3G are as mentioned below:

  • Install iTunes 8.
  • Update iPhone with iTunes and make sure it is activated!
  • Uninstall iTunes 8.
  • Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support (From Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel)
  • Install itunes v7.7.* (http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/) <– all versions of itunes are there.
  • Download Quickpwn with the correct 2.1 bundle from this link.
  • Run quickpwn, select your iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw.
  • You can select Cydia and Installer and logos if you wish.
  • When it is finished the iPhone will reboot. Cydia and Installer will NOT be visible.
  • Install TotalCommander and in the left pane navigate to T-PoT.1.1.zip and click on it. It will install t-pot automatically.
  • Use Totalcommander to install patched mobileinstallation to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework … clickon the dropdown box [–] top left and select network neighbourhood then t-pot. Remeber to back up your original mobileinstallation first! Drag the file from the right pane to the left, not from windows explorer to TotalCOmmander.
  • Still in TotalCommander delete /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist
  • Reboot the phone. This should jailbreak your iPhone.
  • Install “CacheDel” from cydia. Run this after each Cydia update or app install. Soon, Cydia, itself will be updated and this step will no longer be necessary.

The credit for the step-by-step guide goes to geeb.

Please do remember, hacking your iPhone is at your own risk. Hence it is always a good idea to backup your iPhone. This step-by-step guide is only to jailbreak iPhone and will not unlock the 1st generation iPhone.

As always, please let us know if it worked for you in the comments.

ipineapple, thanks for the tip.

Update 1:

It has been observed that apps are unstable including Cydia, so you are
better off waiting until the issues are fixed.

I am sorry folks, I will keep you posted in case I get any more details.

steve rename your itunes folder in your music folder to itunes old or just delete it after you uninstall itunes 8. then install itunes 7.7.

  • steve anderson

deleted all 4 com.apple.mobile.installation.plist cos there is 4 of them guide does not say 4 file rebooted phone how long do you wait looking at the apple logo been 5 mins now

  • Flame Red

Well, this did not work very well. After I upgraded the phone to 2.1, I installed the old version 7 iTunes, and it complained that it would not work with the iPhone because it needed version 8 itunes!

So no my phone is no longer jailbroken :(

  • Gurjinder Virk

I deleted itunes 8 and installed 7.7 and it says " The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." Any ideas on what I should do?

  • E AK

Hey guys, can somebody help me with this step: Use Totalcommander to install patched mobileinstallation to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework … clickon the dropdown box [-\-] top left and select network neighbourhood then t-pot. Remeber to back up your original mobileinstallation first! Drag the file from the right pane to the left, not from windows explorer to TotalCOmmander.

I can not find the path to install mobileinstaller to. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    thanksss

  • E AK

    Hey Virk,

Just delete all your itunes playlist files and it will be able to open up itunes. But since it is an older version, and we already updated our iphones, it wont detect your iphone.

I am basically stuck on that step because I do not know how to access my iphone via totalcommander.

    somebody please helpp

  • Flame Red

Even though I could not use iTunes V7 as documented above, I followed the rest of the procedure and it worked perfectly. I have iTunes V8 back on the PC and see no issues with it. So all good :-)

  • mistaomarh

    Hey Virk,

I'm absolutely retarded with computers but after investing 7 hours into this, I tried this and it did jailbreak my phone. I bought the 3g iphone today and updated to 2.1 like it says above and followed the directions. The Totalcommander is kind of confusing to use for a first timer.

To find the system/library to put installer, on the side of the commander if you are using Vista. You should go to your network connections. I found the T-Pot directory there. Inside you will see the directory you are looking for. This does work and I feel proud of myself

  • Jeff

HEY IPHONE FANS, JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW I JUST FINISHED JAILBREAKING MY IPHONE 2.1 SOFTWARE USING WINDOWS VISTA. CYDIA/INSTALLER ARE BOTH THERE ALONG WITH MY NICE BOOT LOGO. ANYONE ELSE HAVE SUCCESS JAILBREAKING USING WINDOWS? IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK.

  • DJ

Will this work using the iPod Touch's 2.1 firmware?

  • Karim

I can't believe it but it works.

Followed the steps exactly as described. The only confusion was the deleting of the "com.apple.mobile.installation" file. I deleted the largest file of this type because, as mentioned before, there are 4 of the files with the same name.

Great work. I now have all the advantages of the newer software but the added bonus of Cydia.

  • Ryan

Well like most I get stuck during the QuickPwn process. It starts the process then the command prompt window closes and there is just the spinning circle on my iPhone and it goes no further than that… Restoring to 2.0.2 for now until a proper release of QuickPwn is available, or if somebody can maybe help me get this working…

  • Kevin514

Please let me know.. It's such a waste sitting here looking all great

  • snoorez

Hi!!! Instructions above works beautifully! I did everything EXCEPT uninstalling iTunes 8….. I restored the the phone as a new device and updated the firmware…. just close iTunes before running QuickPWN. You don’t have to install iTunes 7.7

  • Hector

Hey my iphone 3g is working alright after i jailbroke it, I just have no boot logo. I wonder what i did wrong.

  • Paul

I am stuck on the quickpwn run step. I get there it says:

    Hashing ispw…..

    Matching ispw

and then it stops and i get an error saying:

quickpwn.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the onconvenience. Send error report. Don't send.

    Any advice??

  • Ryan

This is a crap process, way too buggy. I'm finally on 2.1 but did it by downloading a custom firmware that was already unlocked and pwned under MAC OS. Simple. So far 2.1 is awesome, nice and fast again like 1.1.4!

  • http://onlinegadgetbox.blogspot.com aman

Well man..this article is kinda infusing new ideas in my mind. A very usefull one. Keep up the good work!

  • Wagner

hey folks, followed instructions and it worked perfectly except for the boot logo and my signal bars that are gone….i'll try to install custom ones with cydia if possible

  • chris p..

  • Funky

Hi I have locked my iphone I upgrade on 8 and found every time I log in to itunes the screen is blank and wont allow me to up date.
It says entery a vaild sim card.

    Can any one help???

  • jim

I attempted to jailbreak and didn't realize i needed to delete all three installation files. My phone is now continually trying to boot up and I can't seem to get it to turn off to do a restore. Any ideas?

  • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

    Hey Jim,

You might want to checkout this post to restore your iPhone:
    http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/10/virginizeiphone.html

    cheers!

  • jim

I tried the idea to virginize, but no luck, that is basically because I cannot shut it off properly and get it to recognize in itunes. I get an error that says Itunes could not reconnect to the iphone because an invalid response was received from the device. I should also say that I don't have a sim device in the phone as I don't have at+t service in my area to activate the phone.

  • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

    Hey Jim,

You could try restoring your iPhone by putting it in the DFU mode as explained in that post.

    cheers!

  • jim

I finally did get the phone to go in to dfu mode and restored the phone….then I tried winpwn 2.5..it all seemed to work and then asi I put it in to dfu mode for the final step, I got a microsoft crash error….anyway, the phone is working, but haven't managed to jailbreak it. Not sure what method I should use I could try the earlier method, and then delete all of the mobile installation files and see if that works. What do you think?

  • nano

Worked perfectly. Thanx. Now i just need 2 figure out how to get java on this :P

  • stef

I can't locate the file \system\library\………. on the [-\-] even in Total Commander and my phone keeps rebooting. The 2.1MI file and T-PoP files have opened in the c:\. Please help. I need my phone back

  • Tom Nguyen

    Hi

    As your instruction:
    * Download iPhone firmware 2.1 for iPhone 3g or download iPhone firmware 2.1 for 1st generation iPhone using this link.

    * Install iTunes 8.

    * Update iPhone with iTunes and make sure it is activated!

    * Uninstall iTunes 8.

    * Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support (From Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel)

    * Install itunes v7.7.* (http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/) <– all versions of itunes are there.

After I installed itunes v7.7.*, I plugged my iPhone 2G, it shows the message:

" iPhone can not be used because it requires iTunes V8 or later. Go to http://www.itunes.com to download the lastest version of iTunes"

Do you know why it's still showing this message, could I use v7.7.* to sync my Iphone ? Thanks.

    Tom

i faced a problem during executing the quickpwn.exe2.1 file……when i already restore the 2.1v firmware so help me to out this problem……..what can i do now?

  • Krizzy Morris

I have a 1st gen iphone that was jailbroken & unlocked, all of a sudden it was stuck on the apple logo, i gave up on it & thought that i’ll just let the battery drain, maybe it would go back to normal after it drains but months passed and it’s still stuck on the apple logo, i started searching through the internet ways on how to fix it, all i found is restoring it. I restored it just now and i want to jailbreak it again so i can use my t-mobile sim, but it’s stuck on the emergency screen, i can’t even check the firmware, i tried dialing *3001#12345#* then pressed call but it didn’t enter a field test mode. I don’t know where to start. Do i still need an AT&T sim to start the jailbreaking process because itunes doesn’t recognize the phone, it just says that i should put a simcard. Please help, i would greatly appreciate any info that could help me. Thanks.
