Apple Seeds 1st Beta of iPhone Firmware 2.2 For Compatibility Testing

Apple has seeded developers of its iPhone Developer program with the first beta version of iPhone firmware 2.2 (Build 9M2611).

Apple has not provided much information about the changes in the beta firmware other than a note that it is for "compatibility testing".

It remains to be seen if Apple has included Push Notification Service which Steve Jobs had mentioned would be available to iPhone users in September, or if they will introduce it in future beta versions.

The Push Notification Service is Apple's solution for one of the features that we have been asking for, ability for native iPhone apps to run in the background.

The second beta version of iPhone firmware 2.1 included early Push Notifications APIs only to be pulled out in the fourth beta version of firmware 2.1 for "further development".

As per one Mac Rumors member, he got this reply from Steve Jobs when he sent an e-mail to Apple inquiring if Push Notifications was still scheduled for September:

To: Me

We're running a bit late. We want to get it 100% right the first time.
