The iPhone Dev Team who had reported last week that they have cracked iPhone 3G's baseband and are getting closer to unlock iPhone 3G have published a customary post on their blog to tell us that they have managed to successfully jailbreak and unlock the first generation iPhone running iPhone firmware 2.2 Beta 2 which was recently seeded to developers of its iPhone Developer program.
iPhone firmware 2.2 is not yet available to iPhone users.
When iPhone Firmware 2.2 was first seeded to developers of the iPhone Developer program, the iPhone Dev Team had made the following observations:
- Apple is continuing with their ski-resort theme; iPhone Firmware 2.2 is nicknamed Timberline.
- Apple has gone back to using expiry dates. The first beta version of iPhone Firmware 2.2 is due to expire on November 30, 2008. They had apparently stopped using expiry dates with iPhone firmware 2.1, but for some reason they’ve started using them again.
- The iPhone Dev Team have confirmed that iPhone firmware 2.2 is still vulnerable to Pwnage and Quickpwn on everything but iPod Touch 2G.
They have confirmed that iPhone firmware 2.2 Beta 2 which was seeded to developers earlier in the week is also vulnerable to Pwnage and Quickpwn and they have manged to successfully jailbreak and unlock the first generation iPhone running iPhone firmware 2.2 Beta 2. So if Apple releases iPhone firmware 2.2, iPhone Dev team should be able to release their hacking tools fairly soon.
They have also published an image below to demonstrate that they have been able to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2. The screen shot below shows one of the unofficial native iPhone apps Terminal.app running on firmware 2.2 which is being used to display the kernel build information.
They also point out that Apple has left an interesting daemon lying around in the latest iPhone firmware but haven't gone into details on what it meant.
Apple has not yet announced when iPhone firmware 2.2 will be available to iPhone users.

Why is uname showing 1,1? unless thats showing the iPhone version rather than th firmware version *shrugs*
Well i updated my 3g to 2.2 due to my last 2.1 jailbreakdown it left me no choice for some reason the new jailbreak worked so well i thought i was dreaming thae last one was a mess and took me 3 hrs to end up with a mess a week later with it rebooting over and over until i thought i fixed it and lost the ability to access my phone numbers in my contacts it was bad then i updated to 2.2 threw itunes and then jailbroke it and so far so good if unlocking is not an issue for you update with the 2.2 jailbreak now before you get stuck like i did and maybe loose the chance to unlock it
