MewSeek Brings P2P File Sharing to the iPhone

iPhone app developer, Errrick who had developed iSlsk, the first peer-to-peer (P2P) application for the jailbroken iPhone has released an updated version of the P2P Soulseek client for iPhone firmware 2.x and renamed it as MewSeek.

Along with MewSeek, Errrick has also released PwnPlayer, an alternative iPhone app to iPhone's iPod app which is required to listen to anything downloaded using MewSeek.

Soulseek is a unique ad-free, spyware free, and just plain free file sharing application developed by Nir Arbel, a former Napster programmer similar to others like LimeWire, and BitTorrent.

Errrick has released an updated version of iSlsk for iPhone firmware 2.x and renamed it as MewSeek which works with the Soulseek network. He had developed the initial version of the iPhone app by using open source version of Soulseek client for the Mac as reference.

MewSeek also works over EDGE, Wi-Fi, and a 3G data connection now.

This is what Errrick had to say when he had released iSlsk:

"I saw all the capabilities this little gadget had and then thought 'why didn't someone already do something like this?'"

You need to first setup your username and password to get started. Once that's done, tap on the connect button. The user interface is quite simple and intutive, though a little buggy.

You can checkout the video of iSlsk in action to get an idea:

MewSeek is available only for the jailbroken iPhone and you can it MewSeek via Cydia, the popular installer app for jailbreak apps. Thanks to Cydia, installing Mewseek is a lot easier this time round. You will also need to install PwnPlayer, an alternative media player to iPhone's iPod app to listen to anything downloaded using MewSeek.

Both MewSeek and PwnPlayer are a little buggy at this point of time. According to the developer:

"MewSeek is only was released only for experimental and testing purposes. I admit it is not quite stable yet and I also had to disable a few features temporarily until I find better ways to implement them (e.g. the "Downloads" screen, the ability to prevent Wi-Fi from disconnecting when locking the device, and a few others). However, the core and basic features are working as seen in iSlsk.

PwnPlayer is still on its early development stages and it might still not work as fast and stable than the stock player, but it is continuously being improved as you read this message."

We would advise you to use this iPhone app at your own risk and MewSeek clearly states not to use the app to download songs that you do not have legal rights to.

In case you give it a test drive tell us what you think about MewSeek in the comments below.
