Apple Blows Past its Target of 10 million iPhones; 200 Million iPhone Apps Downloaded

iPhone 3G

Apple has blown past its own target of 10 million iPhones thanks to a superb September quarter where they sold 6.9 million iPhones.

Steve Jobs also reported that iPhone users will be downloading the 200-millionth iPhone app from the App Store tomorrow.

You can checkout some of the highlights of Apple's quarterly results related to the iPhone after the jump.

The 6.9 million iPhones sold in the fourth quarter of 2008, surpasses the sales of the first generation iPhones sold till date (6.1 million).

Apple managed to easily surpass the modest sales target of 10 million that they had set for themselves for 2008 with another quarter to go.

If Apple had not deferred iPhone results (subscription accounting), it would have represented 39% of Apple's revenue for the quarter.

iPhone users will download the 200-millionth iPhone app from the App Store tomorrow, and the rate of new applications is unbelievable.

Rate of new iPhone applications being submitted is increasing every week.

Steve Jobs mentioned that competitors are scrambling to copy the App Store taking a dig at Google's Android Market for T-Mobile G1 to begin with and RIM's Application Centre for BlackBerry, but he believes will not be that easy to do.

The iPhone will be sold in more than 70 countries by the end of the December quarter. 3100 points of iPhone distribution in the U.S. Over 30,000 points of distribution around the world.

Here are some comments from Apple's CEO Steve Jobs:

"Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the iPhone -- we sold more phones than RIM,"

"Apple beat RIM! RIM is a good company that sells good products, but measured by revenues (not units), Apple has become the world's third-largest mobile phone supplier."

Congratulations to Apple for a brilliant quarter and for crossing their sales target.
