iPhone Firmware 2.2: Problems and Workarounds to Fix them

iPhone Firmware 2.2

Apple released iPhone firmware 2.2 last night which includes many improvements and also a lot of bug fixes.

However, some users who have updated their iPhones with the latest iPhone firmware are reporting problems running some iPhone apps, internet connection issues etc.

Problems with iPhone apps:

Users are reporting issue with some third-party iPhone apps due to API changes and other modifications in iPhone firmware 2.2. To fix this issue, iPhone developers will need to update their iPhone apps. It appears applications using CoreAudio are affected.

In some cases where there is no API change, uninstalling and reinstalling the iPhone app could solve the problem.

"Could not connect to internet" error:

Some iPhone users are reporting that they are getting the "Could not connect to internet" error after upgrading to iPhone firmware 2.2.

One of the workarounds to fix this problem is to switch from 3G to EDGE.

App Store extremely slow:

Some iPhone users are reporting issues with the App Store, complaining that it is very slow. However this does not seem to be an issue due to the firmware update but a server side issue due to high load which Apple should fix shortly.

"SIM card not inserted" error:

Some users are receiving an error message indicating that the SIM card is not inserted, or that a PIN lock is in place when none should exist.

You can sometimes get resolved by removing the iPhone’s SIM card, then connecting it to your computer and restoring. iTunes may then reload the iPhone software successfully, after which you can re-insert the SIM card and attempt synchronization with iTunes.

Kilometers instead of miles in Google Maps

It appears that Google Maps for the iPhone now displays kilometers instead of miles for various countries after upgrading to iPhone firmware 2.2. You can temporarily resolve the issue by selecting ‘USA’ in International settings, though this might result in other problems for iPhone users outside the U.S.

Update 1:

As per this Apple forums discussion thread, a number of GMail users are reporting problems sending mail from the iPhone via GMail’s SMTP servers, with a “Sender Not Allowed” response. This is not a problem specific to iPhone firmware 2.2, as iPhone users who have not upgraded to the latest firmware are also observing this problem. The problem seems to be on GMail’s end rather than a problem with the iPhone or iPhone firmware 2.2. The workaround for this issue is to turn off Gmail as your SMTP server until the issue is not resolved (thanks URherenow for highlighting the typo) and configure an alternate outbound SMTP server in your iPhone’s Mail settings.

  1. Dave says:

A few occasion the home buttom key was not able to function when iphone is in phone mode. This issue was rectified after iphone was restarted.

  2. Joe says:

My battery life is about 50% of what it was with ver 2.1. I'm pretty upset with the situation. Really wish there was a way to downgrade.

  3. shane blyth says:

i am glad i have not uodated there is nothing in there i wanted anyways.. alls i want is copy and paste a phone that doesnt slow down after 24 hours and requires a restart and things like the ability to forward a txt

  4. David says:

  5. steve says:

google street view were is it and how does it work I can't find it

  6. Chris says:

I'm also not able to find street view as an option on my 3G Iphone.

  7. aLi says:

Chris, you gotta drop a ping in your google maps and view that pin

  8. URherenow says:

Once.. maybe a typo… but twice?

Dude… until the issue is not resolved = until the issue is resolved.

  9. Mooseday says:

The "SMS Preview" option has now reverted back to the 2.0 mode, where despite turning off the preview it still displays the phone number / contact of the sender even with the phone locked. This was fixed in 2.1 but now we have taken a step back again … well done.

  10. steve says:

dropping a pin still does not give you street view unless your in the usa in the uk its there but not highlighted you cant use it

  11. brandon says:

    @Dave,

There is a way to downgrade, just download an older firmware and restore it to that firmware.

I haven't had any problems with 2.2 tho, i would also just like to say how much i love the new feature of pressing the home button while on any page to take you back to your first page of apps. its makes things much easier when you have many pages of apps.

  12. parker gaines says:

all of my apps say there on the phone but i used the categories app from the jail broken app store and now whne i updated they say there there but i cannot get to them because all of the jail broken apps are gone like winter board and such i cant re download them from the app store because it says installed plz help

  13. Rob says:

    @ parker

I have categories installed currently, and the new version had a disclaimer stating to "be very careful", and to "remove all apps from folders and uninstall before updating."

I have had some problems with categories also like adding apps to folders and then it crashes and doesn't show up in the folder.

I'm not sure on how to get your apps back but you could try managing removing them directly off iTunes and then syncing your phone and then it may remove them.

    Hope this helps

  14. DANIS says:

IN 2.2 I HAVE SOME ISSUES WITH LOSING THE 1 COUPLE OF LINES IN SMS, NOTES AND CONTACTS… (VERY ANNOYING)

PLUS SSH IS NOT AS STABLE … ANYBODY KNOWS WHY?

  15. Shamus says:

Wad is the account username and password for the iapps?

  16. Shamus says:

Wad is the account username and password for the iapps?

  17. Jonatan says:

I have issues with the SSH Connection, I've done everything and nothing works.. I/O connection failure..

In other hands at some point the Wifi stopped working, at the general tab looks connected to a network, but the edge logo did not change to wifi bars… and obviuosly did not work…. I did a restore to solve this.

  18. Chris says:

With 2.2 my battery life has decreased from 1 day 12 hours between charges to about 9 hours between charges. My phone usage patterns have not changed. The phone is usually on standby (I don't play music through it, surf the web, etc. I do check email once in a while.)

  19. izzymunchkin says:

this problem happend b4 updatin 2 2.2 but im connected 2 my home wifi and in the list of wifi's it says im connected but when i try 2 browse da internet it just says dat im not connected but when i updated it it said could not activate cellular data network etc etc..

o by the way da E is comin up where da bars r supposed 2 b,

    THANX!!!

  20. Skylight says:

After upgrading to 2.2 via Pwnage Location Services and GPS does not work. Everything else seems to be fine. I keep getting an error message saying "Your Location Could Not Be Determined". No such problem when I ha s2.1 installed. Has anyone else experienced this?

  21. dave says:

    I've got a good one:

All of my AppStore Apps crash immediately, yet none of my Installer/Cydia apps do.

They were working fine earlier today, and now they don't. The only thing I did on the phone was add some music. I removed all music from the iphone and rebooted, and all the appstore apps still crash.

Not too sure if anyone else is having this problem.

I'm going to try and restore to see if that will fix it.

  22. Looneyhouston says:

If you have jailbroken your 2.2 iPhone 3g and are having trouble downloading anything from the appstore then all you have to do is enter cydia and download the source for steffwiz and there should be a patch for the 2.2 mobile installer. Download and reboot and wala problem solved!!!!

  23. Damian says:

I have noticed battery life has halved since moving to 2.2 from 2.1 and I havent changed anything else! Apple reps must read these forums! Listen to the users! How hard can it be to make a phone that works properly with all their knowledge!

oh and my texts have started stopping sending even with full bars! f**** sake!

  24. Oscar says:

My iphone won't let me place calls! I touch the Green phone app, the keypad appears for 4-5 seconds, then back to my springboard! Is this because of the 2.2 update and/or Cydia and Installer?? Should I restore and unjailbreak?? Opinions will really help…

  25. Oscar says:

I found the solution to my own problem! It seems as though mobile enhancer was the app that prevented me from using the phone app. Mobile Enhancer is found from Installer, and if you had the same problem, try uninstalling mobile enhancer from Installer, then restart your iphone…

  26. zoides says:

i just up-grade my jailbroken iphone 2g from 2.1.to 2.2,.. problem is, it cannot play all the song in my playlist,.it is like been set to play only one song and repeat it all over again,.need help,..

  27. Penny says:

hi, i can´t update any app from app store, even doing the update in iTunes and syncing with the iPhone, it gives error.

And another important thing, the option to repeat the album or song, doesn´t work for me. Do the same happens with you?????? i really like and use that option to continually repeat the same album or music.

  28. Penny says:

i think your problem is that you have the icom to repeat music active.
Is the circular arrow on the left side of the menu of ipod control. click, and disable option to repeat

  29. earthmonkey says:

I have the same symptoms as zoides (kind of). I have upgraded to 2.2 and jailbroke it and all is 99% well. The only thing is that I cannot install apps from the App Store directly onto the iphone. In my case, I have to sync with iTunes to get the App Store apps to install. Cydia and Installer work fine. Any thoughts

  30. Rome says:

thank you oscar! it worked for me too; i freaked out

  31. Pete says:

After 2.2 battery life down by 50%. Safari freezes up often, appears to crash. Phone listing of "Recents" or "Contacts" freezes up and will not scroll, usually after switching to phone from some other app.

  32. karan says:

I cant sync my itunes – my apps from 2.1 & the play list show in itunes but when i sync them they dnt show on the phone.
i have given up, please help or tell me how to go back to 2.1 where i can enjoy my phone.

    thanks & regds/ KV

  33. cpenner says:

karan, in iTunes before you sync, does the applications tab have all apps selected, or just selected apps?

  34. Dangerous says:

Battery life severly decreased and gets hot really quick during use and charge
    Battery drains on sleep mode
    Safari crashes constantly
    3G connection is slow
Wifi is having issues such as no Connection when I'm connected at home, runs slower like a page loads normally than at the same spot (3/4 maybe a tiny bit more) it stops for like 20 seconds, never did this before
On the typepad some keys don't pop up
All apps stop working at the same time
Updates dissPeR saying all apps up2 date
The other day I got the rcovery mode screen after powering down and powering back up, upon iTunes connection it didn't recognize my phone and I got 6 different error messages but It synced after I pulled out my USB and put back
    Sometimes my speakers stop working
All my purchased songs are gone
My cell reception has kicked the bucket it's garbage now constantly searching, no service or 1 or 2 bars
Phone freezes up, never has before ok ok once before but this time for like 30 min each
I think that's it. My phone isnt unlocked or never been jailbroken and it's a 3G. I restored it, no help. Next I'm gonna attempt to get 2.1 firmware back tomorrow. I'm hoping it's gonna work and not brick my ish like it has to others. Ima get the last iTunes version and see.

Oh yea YouTube videos sometimes stop playing even after the whole video is loaded. I know there's more but those are the main things, that's prolly it tho

  35. uk5am says:

Yes, my battery life is still bad even after reverting back to 2.1 from installing/upgrading to 2.2! Plus I had 2 funny problems when calls came in. If the person was in my phone book it would just vibrate and not ring at all. Then it would ring out and go to voicemail but I cannot "slide to answer" because it would not allow me to slide – nothing happens on the touch screen! Got fed up and thus went back to 2.1 within hours. Now battery life sucks!

  36. Emil says:

Dude's i'm not sure if the problem with my speaker appeared because of the hardware. Since I've updated my 2g iphone to 2.2 and jailbroken it, the speaker sounds like broken. But before the update everything was pretty fine. Any similar situations or solutions?

  37. ty says:

I have upgraded my iPod Touch (1G) to 2.2 and QuickPwn'd it. All seems to work fine, except I can't install new Apps. I have iTunes 8.0.2, and I gett the following error: The Application was not installed on the iPhone because it could not be verified.

I have tried installing a new free app, turning off the iPod touch, and then turning it back on. But unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work.

The apps that were already installed on my iPod touch before the update to 2.2 are working perfectly, but the new apps I am trying to install do not work.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

  38. Sal says:

Gotta love Big Broth.. I mean Apple – the only way to make the iPhone 3G work is to disable the 3G.

  39. Sohail says:

    Hello..

I have unlocked my iphone. I can make calls and receive. I cannot access internet. i can see the 'E" on the home screen. but cannot access internet. I am using a 2g iphone, the version is 2.2. Please advise.

  40. Howard Ling says:

I'm having an issue with dropped calls after upgrading to firmware 2.2. My iphone is jailbroken and unlocked, both using software methods from you. I unlocked the iphone using "yellowsnow." After this was done, I'm getting more dropped calls, unlike before. I can see the signal strength from full-strength to none and back. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thank you.

  41. Clarence says:

After following the steps to jailbreak my 3G iphone, I could not sync my new games into the phone, error message "it cannot be verify". Please assist.
