Apple has released iPhone firmware 2.2 through iTunes just like we had speculated though the midnight release is a little strange.
iPhone firmware 2.2 release notes indicates that it includes most of the features we had heard about in the last few months.
You can get all the details of iPhone firmware 2.2 after the break.
The release notes lists many bug fixes and improvements in iPhone firmware 2.2, they are mentioned below:
- Enhancements to Maps (reported here)
- Google Street View
- public transit and walking directions
- display address of dropped pins
- share location via email
- Enhancements to Mail
- resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
- improved formatting of wide HTML email
- improved stability and performance of Safari
- Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network) (reported here)
- Decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
- Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages
- Pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you to the first Home screen
- Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings (reported here)
So iPhone firmware 2.2 includes most of the features we had heard about in the last few months except for the home button trick which appears to be quite useful.
We need to see if the firmware update includes the fix for the iPhone Safari exploit that was reported yesterday.
Its good to see that it includes improved stability and performance of Safari, so hopefully it should reduce the iPhone Safari crashes. It also includes the fix for isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email.
If you have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone then updating your iPhone with the latest firmware is not recommended at least until the iPhone Dev Team have not released the latest version of their Pwnage Tool which can hack iPhone firmware 2.2.
The dev team has also warned iPhone 3G users who are looking forward to unlock
their iPhone 3Gs to avoid upgrading to upcoming iPhone firmware 2.2 until they don't give an all clear.
You can download the latest firmware (246 mb) directly through iTunes.
Thanks Jim, HyperGo and Xattica for the heads up!
Update 1:
The security fixes list here confirms that the exploit reported yesterday has been fixed, it mentions a fix for the Safari exploit "Visiting a maliciously crafted website may initiate a phone call without user interaction".
Users are reporting a number of problems after installing the latest firmware, some of these include:
One user was unable to delete emails.
Another users reported that his update failed, iTunes gave him an error but he ignored it and went on with the download, now his iPhone is stuck on the connect to iTunes screen.
Some users are reporting that the auto-brightness stops working properly.
Update 2:
Apple has also released iTunes 8.0.2. It is available through Apple's iTunes site or via software update.
One of our readers, Scott, is reporting problems with Turbo SIM, the hardware unlocking method after updating to iPhone firmware 2.2.
"Well I updated to the new 2.2 and now my Turbo Sim is not working. My iphone just says no service. I cant even sync to itunes. When I connect my iphone 3g to comp itunes comes up and then gives this error
"itunes could not connect to the iphone because an invalid response was received from the device""
His advice:
"To all do not update if you are using your iphone with tmobile or any other carrier than at&t"
Sorry to hear about the issue Scott but thanks for the feedback.
App Store links in iPhone Safari link directly to the App Store.
Emoji icons are included for Japanese users as reported earlier.
Netshare still works.
Apple has also released a new iPhone User Guide which includes the features introduced in iPhone firmware 2.2. You can check it by following this link.
Update 3:
Update 4:
Readers, John and Matteo (thanks guys) had reported problems with the App Store update page. However, Jeff clarifies (thanks Jeff):
I am having the same issue with the App Store and I have not updated to 2.2, so I don't think it has anything to do with the update.
He thinks, it could be because:
Maybe Apple temporarily disabled this feature while their servers are being overwhelmed with downloads of 2.2.

I just updated my 3g jailbroken 2.1 to 2.2 and my phone back to the original setting (unjailbroken)
So far everything is OK.. i guess just need to wait till the iPhone Dev Team to release the latest version of their Pwnage Tool which can hack iPhone firmware 2.2.
what useless crap!
ana… why would you go and do a silly thing like that?
Utterly useless update. This is all they give? GO iphone dev team! You rock!
I just updated to 2.2 and now my app store won't stop loading in the update screan. Is this only my phone
I was hoping that this update will fix my GPS but it is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT, nothing helpful to the new fw, my update went easy, I can't see anything that is taking woooooooooooooow, is this part of the Iphone mania!!!!
Same problem. my apps store is working but not the update peage. Alo found other programs with connectivity issue!
Hello, one question came to mind…. I got my iPhone 2G last year and hadit unlocked to use with my local carrier in mexico Telcel, and i've been updating/unlocking with every update to date, this year my local carrier has iPhone service available so it came to mind the question, "should i keep updating with the unlock feature, or could i just update from iTunes normally?", I'd appreciate if someone can ilustrate me… thanks
I am having the same issue with the App Store and I have not updated to 2.2, so I don't think it has anything to do with the update.
Maybe Apple temporarily disabled this feature while their servers are being overwhelmed with downloads of 2.2.
scott just cleared what i was going to ask good thing i didnt updated my iphone, hopefully dev team would bring soft. method to 3g users soon, cant wait
screenshots of jailbroken 2.2 iphone already up

Yeah the App Store Update timeout is also an issue with 2.1 so I would say it's the servers, installing apps works fine.
i just updated to 2.2, but for some reason the "street view" feature in google maps does not work. is there something special i need to do to activate it? or does it only work on the the iphone 3G?
im having trouble connecting my iphone on my WIFI at home but i see WIFI bars that indicate im already connectd but not working….pls help!! and thnx in advance
JUST purchased the iPhone TODAY and its good to know that this update has already taken place.
I hope you hear what I have to say about it!

updated to test some stuff, it seems if you have boss prefs running on jb iphone, and you have hidden icons, the icons stay hidden after update
So I'm not updating until dev releases new jailbreak, but has anyone checked out the maps walking directions? Does it actually give you walking directions like cutting through fields and what not? Does it know where you can and can't walk through? Is it simply the shortest route (cutting through the yards of houses)? Can't wait until I can update!
So nothing really useful, eh?
No copy-paste
No wide email
What a crap
Wi-Fi not working for too! Very frustrating!
Hi my iphone is working fantastic & so smooth with 2.2,
The only problem I had was trying to update in xp. I tried it so many times I gave up! I then did it on my macbook and it worked 1st time. I work for panasonic and if I restore on a mac previously it wouldnt connect to our home cinema ipod dock so I had to use windows. But on 2.2 mac formatted it now works.
I can finally update apps on the iphone without having to uninstall them first! Thank you Apple!!!
BTW, for 2.1 I had to restore several times (4 in fact) to actually get it to work – it seems that its like a heatsink in that you have to have several goes before it actually sits properly. Odd, but perhaps worth a go for those of you who are finding that promised functionality is not working might like to give that a go
Not sure if this has been reported but Bluetooth Phone book Sync now works again…..
That for me makes the update worth it alone.
Just updated then Jailbroke 3G Iphone. settings icon missing and no cydia or installer.
Do NOT upgrade to v2.2 if you are using a TURBO SIM to use the 3G on networks other than AT&T. Firmware v2.2 disables the TURBO SIM. I have 3 different ones and NONE work anymore. Even reverting back to Firmware 2.2 didn't help. V 2.2 updated the baseband and it appears that doesn't roll back with a restore??
Thanks Apple. I thought you were better than that.

Hi 2 all. I had iPhone 3g v.2.1 with Turbo-Sim and upgrade it to v.2.2, so my phone say next "emergency call only". Who can help me????
@camo^et,
Based on your observation and other reader comments it appears that Apple has broken the hardware method to unlock iPhone 3G with Firmware 2.2.
Reader, yankii, has summarized the situation here:
