iPhone Dev Team has just announced that Linux 2.6 kernel has been successfully ported to the iPhone.
Dev team member planetbeing has been credited for achieving this milestone along with CPICH, cmw, poorlad, ius and saurik. They have been able to achieve it by reverse engineering Apple's hardware drivers.
Thanks to their effort, Linux is now available for 1st gen iPhone, iPhone 3G as well as the 1st gen iPod Touch.
Planetbeing has mentioned in the announcement that this is currently a rough first draft of the port as drivers for touchscreen, sound, Wi-Fi/cell radio support are still missing.
It appears that they also have plans to port Android to the iPhone and are looking for folks with prior experience in hacking/porting Android.
You can checkout the video demonstration of Linux running on the iPhone below:
You can download the Linux port here and follow these instructions to install it.
Please proceed with caution as this is only for the technically inclined. It is also a rough first draft and in current form will make your iPhone unusable.
Today's announcement is another milestone for the iPhone hacking community.
Lets us know your thoughts on this breaking news.
Thanks Jory for the tip!

Hey people as you all know the iphone is not open source. Apple does not like people hacking their sh!t. If this takes off we can do so much cool stuff with the iphone running linux if people jump on board. I must say this is an amazing development.

An Open Source Iphone is always a great news, hopefully one day there will be a variety of optional OS available for the device. It's a very good news!
