Quake Ported to the iPhone Could be Coming to the App Store Soon

We have already seen Quake and Quake 3: Arena, popular first-person-shooter games ported to the iPhone but have been available only to users who have jailbroken their iPhone.

The good news is that Quake might be available to everyone via the App Store as ZodTTD who had ported Quake to the iPhone has just announced on his blog that he has recently submitted his free iPhone app to Apple and hoping to get an approval soon.

ZodTTD has made the following announcement on his blog:

"I recently submitted a free port of Quake to Apple's AppStore. It is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch of all versions/firmwares 2.0+. Here is a video of it in action!

At first accelerometer support was included, but it is very hard to play the game while maintaining the positions needed for Quake. So it has been disabled in this revision.

It usually takes between 2 to 5 days to get an app approved (or rejected) for AppStore. Once/if approved for AppStore, it will be updated to include network play, mods / downloadable content, and more!

As you can see and hear, this version has sound support and uses a landscape orientation.

Please support my efforts on bringing this awesome title to AppStore, and leave a comment..."

You can checkout the video demo of the official version of Quake for the iPhone:

Based on the video, the official app seems to be a little better than the one available for the jailbroken iPhone. If you have a jailbroken your iPhone, you can install Quake4iPhone via Cydia.

ZodTTD has also ported game emulators like PlayStation Emulator, Game Boy Advance Emulator, Playstation (PS1 or PSX) emulator etc to the iPhone.

Even though the some versions of Quake engine are free and is covered by GNU General Public License, the chances of it being approved by Apple without the blessing from id Software who own the copyright to the game seems doubtful.

We have already seen some iPhone apps rejected or removed from the App Store due to copyright issues. We will keep you posted as soon as we get any news, lets hope its good news.

Do you think the free port of Quake for the iPhone will get approved? Tell us in the comments below.

Good luck ZodTTD!
