iPhone App - SMS Touch Allows you to Type SMS in Landscape mode and Send Them For Free

iPhone App - SMS Touch

iPhone app developer, Mark Schneider, who had developed TouchType, one of the many iPhone apps that have brought landscape mode to the iPhone's mail app has released another app called SMS Touch.

SMS Touch allows you to type text messages in landscape mode and also send these messages for free.

One of the limitations of iPhone's SMS application like the Mail app is that it does not support landscape mode for reading or writing an email.

Just like TouchType which brought landscape mode to iPhone's Mail app, SMS Touch also allows iPhone users to type text messages in landscape mode.

SMS Touch also allows users to send these messages for free. The messaging is free because instead of sending an SMS, the app actually e-mails the message through an SMS gateway, which eventually reaches the recipient's phone in the form of a text message.

The problem with this workaround is that the recipient does not see the contact number or contact name, instead it shows that the text message is from a randomly generated number "1010100012" as seen in the video below. One of the readers has also complained that this method does not work with all US carriers.

Since it internally uses the iPhone's mail app, it also uses the mail signature which will solve the above case of letting someone know who sent the message but will increase the size of the text message.

The next version of SMS Touch will also include the spell check functionality.

SMS Touch is not the ideal way to send text messages but if you are looking for an option to send unlimited text messages for free and want to avoid paying $5 per month to $20 per month for SMS as per AT&T's iPhone 3G rate plans then you can check it out.

You can check the video of the iPhone app to get an overview:

SMS Touch costs $4.99, part of which goes towards the backend support for the program. You can download it using this direct iTunes link.

You can also use AOL's iPhone app to send free text messages or use this iPhone trick.

What do you think about SMS Touch?
