Apple will start selling iPhone 3G at Walmart stores on Sunday

Apple will start selling iPhone 3G at Walmart stores on Sunday, December 28th. Walmart has officially made the announcement confirming earlier reports.

As we had last reported, Walmart will be selling iPhone 3G only for $2 less than the regular price with a two-year contract: $197 for the 8 GB iPhone 3G model, or $297 for the 16 GB iPhone model.

Walmart will sell the 8 GB iPhone 3G model for $197, a 1% discount from its $199 retail price; and the 16 GB iPhone model for $297, a 0.7% discount from its $299 retail price, both with two-year contract.

WalMart will become the second independent retail chain after Best Buy to sell the iPhone. It is also sold at Apple and AT&T retail stores.

This is good news for Apple as it means that iPhone 3G will be available at 2500 more distribution points in the US. An analyst had indicated that the Walmart deal could translate into sales of 4.5 million iPhones for Apple in 2009.

Walmart's press release does not mention an $99 iPhone which we had reported was highlight unlikely.
