The iPhone Dev team who are planning to release the much awaited software method to unlock iPhone 3G on New Year's eve have just broadcasted a live demo video of an iPhone 3G being software unlocked with yellowsn0w (name of their project to unlock iPhone 3G) via Qik.

As you can see in the live demo, the procedure to unlock iPhone 3G appears to very simple and quick.
MuscleNerd's who gave the live demo clarified that one will not have to get their hands dirty using command line tools. It looks like they are going to be releasing their software method to unlock iPhone 3G via Cydia (which means you will need to first jailbreak your iPhone).

I got my 3G iphone on an 18 month contract with O2 here in the UK. Unfortunately I cant get a 3G signal with O2 where I live but can with Vodafone and T-mobile. So gonna get my wife a new phone on one of those contracts and swap her sim over for mine. At last I'll be able to use 3G on my iPhone

need to get the newer Baseband or this will be worthless for new iphone owners that purchase the device with preinstalled 2.2 fw.
Thats a big acheivement by dav team but unfortunately it wont do anygood to my 3G cuz i upgraded it to 2.2.
I did too-using pwnage tool-and I can unlock cuz the 2.2.1 pwnage tool did NOT allow the baseband to be upgraded.
The DEV team are geniuses, I used to think I knew a lot about computers, but this is truly an amazing feat.
For those who upgraded to 2.2 and have a 2.28.00 baseband, and are locked again… im happy to announce that I bought a proxy sim from ebay and i received it today… and it does work with 2.28.00 baseband! Quick question here… I read at some points that for Windows users who want to unlock their 3g they would need to run Winpwn first and then Quickpwn… Are we going to need Winpwn first in order to use yellowsn0w? I'm asking because from the look of it, it appears that Winpwn may become vaporware after all.
So after the Iphone 3g is UNLOCKED with yellowsn0w will it be safe to upgrade to 2.2 firmware with ITUNES ?
I don't have a Mac I want to jailbreak I am running 2.1 firmware If you cant use qwkpwn to jailbreak if you want to use yellowsn0w how do I jailbreak?

based on the lack of reply/feedback to your question and my comprehension of Dev Team declaration, I guess you really only have two options:
1-either find/buy a mac with OS X
2-wait for winpwn (which last update is dated from september 14th) to be released

It's sad to see that so many people still try to unlock their 3G iPhones and have then to find out, that unlocking only works for 1st generation iphones. For 3G Phones only jailbreaking is possible (allows you to install all the software, mp3, videos, ringtones, etc. you want) on your iphone.
