iBluetooth Video Demo Confirms Bluetooth File Transfer Coming Soon to the iPhone

A developer, medevil, has just claimed that his iPhone app called iBluetooth will allow users to transfer files from their iPhone to other Bluetooth devices. He has also released a demo video of his iPhone app in action.

We had recently written about SweetTooth, the jailbreak app released by the Bluetooth dev team whose goal is to also get all the missing Bluetooth profiles working on the iPhone. medevil is not part of the Bluetooth dev team.

The iPhone comes with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (short for Enhanced Data Rate) built-in. But it only supports the Bluetooth Headset Profile and Bluetooth Hands-free Profile 1.5 which is a major limitation.

The most commonly requested applications in the Bluetooth stack by iPhone users are A2DP wireless stereo support and the ability to transfer files to other bluetooth devices.

As you can see in the video below one of those requests will soon be addressed. In the video demo, medevil shows an iPhone running the app sending and receiving between a Mac and a Sony Ericsson handset.

However, there is some controversy over who is responsible for some of the code in iBlueTooth. The iBlueTooth dev team who had released SweetTooth have called medevil "a thief" on their forums. Here is a link to medevil's blog post to announce the app, but he didn't seem to have any comments regarding the controversy.

What we know is that both iPhone apps iBluetooth will not be free and you will need a jailbroken iPhone to install it via Cydia.

What do you think about the ability to transfer files via Bluetooth using your iPhone? Tell us in the comments.

FINALLY! I'm so sick of unplugging my USB cord from my wall charger every time I want to change my music. Or, when I take my laptop around without my cord and want to connect my iphone to my computer! I bought my computer with bluetooth and have yet to use this function! This is actually a big deal for me!

This is great news, hopefully we'll be able to use our iPhones to play audio through our Bluetooth enabled car stereos as well.

"What we know is that both iPhone apps will not be free…"
When did the iBluetooth team announce they'd be charging money for their Bluetooth app? As far as I had heard they were going to release it for free over Cydia.

this guy is an asshole, its not his work. he used to work for the sweettooth team but he stole there code and passed it off as his own

    Hey InSovietRussiaPhoneEyesYou,

You are right, iBluetooth team release the app first to donors (fair enough) and then release it to general public after a few days via Cydia for free.

I have updated the post accordingly.

    Thanks for highlighting it.

I am an original member of the iBluetooth Project. We are the iPhone dev team and medevil came into our forums, posted code that he ripped off from someone else, and even that was under the GPL and NOT FOR THE IPHONE! He ripped off our name which is part of why we named it sweettooth and if you have half a brain you won't pay for his app and you will use our free one instead. We need donations to pay for hosting to keep our app free so please donate at http://www.ibluetoothproject.com/donate to keep us going.

iBluetooth is not available on the App Store, you can install it on your
jailbroken iPhone via Cydia. However, as far as we know it doesn't work with
    iPhone OS 3.0.
