Just like the tethering feature which we had reported about yesterday, another missing feature from the iPhone is the ability to send MMS.
If you are in UK then you are in luck as an iPhone app has just been released on Apple's UK App Store called "MMS Photo Messaging" which enables MMS on the iPhone.
Developers, Ross McKillop and Ed Lea seem to have addressed the lack of MMS feature with an iPhone app that allows users to send MMS features (with a catch); one of the features surprisingly still missing from the iPhone.
Here are some of the features of their iPhone app:
- View your already-retrieved MMS messages when you're offline
- Send MMS messages without the need to use Mail.app
- Uses your iPhone address book to display senders' names.
The iPhone app works by prompting for an iPhone user’s O2 mobile number and the PIN that O2 sends when a subscriber receives an MMS message. The app then retrieves the MMS messages from O2 (which is probably the reason the app is restricted to users in UK).
The iPhone app can be downloaded for free from the UK App Store using this iTunes link. You can receive MMS for free however as folks at Neowin point out there is a catch. You need to pay £3.79 for 10 messages which works out to nearly 72¢ per message.
Though this is an interesting workaround for all those who want to use the MMS feature on their iPhone, the cost of sending the messages seems to be very expensive.
There are already cheaper ways to send MMS from your iPhone using some tricks or unofficial iPhone apps such as Swirly MMS that can be installed via Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone which also charge a fee but are not so expensive.
What do you think about the "MMS Photo Messaging" app?

This is a cool little app. Will only be using it to receive MMS as it's far too pricey to send them.
I live in the UK and I tried using this program yesterday.
The thing is, you won't be able to use the program before somebody else send a MMS message to your iPhone first (which is really annoying as I have to ask some people to do this to me, maybe tomorrow I'll find one) and therefore you can't use the program straight away, you'll be prompted to enter your mobile phone number and a pin code, there is no way to skip that or to go to the settings or whatever .. you MUST get at least one MMS message first and use the pin code that is supposed to come to you through a text message from O2 network, otherwise the program is useless.
I believe (and I am very sure) that we will see a lot of MMS applications coming to the iTunes store soon which will support other countries like USA's AT&T. For me it is far better to use them through a supported carrier rather than using the jailbroken apps which requires modification to MMS settings and most people are not having the knowledge of doing it.
Hey ZedSefi,
Thanks for providing the details on the iPhone app.
You are right we are quite likely to see country based versions of such apps.
It is really messed up that its not in the US yet.
Well, I've enabled MMS on my iphone (via another app available via jailbreak).. i'm in the US… the problem here, is AT&T blocks via flags on the account MMS's to iphone based accounts, so you have to jump through hoops (or get things just right) on your account for it to even work..
i have an iphone 3G
i live in the US and currently have it jailbroken with Swirlymms installed via cydia and i love it
at first it didnt work but i did some research on a forum network and found settings that worked now it works flawlessly
