iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Released: Includes Minor Bug Fixes and Improvements [Updated]

iPhone Firmware 2.2.1

Apple has just released iPhone firmware 2.2.1 (5H11A) through iTunes.

The firmware update contains minor bug fixes and improvements such as improved stability of Safari and a fix for an issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll.

The release notes lists minor bug fixes and improvements in iPhone firmware 2.2.1. They are mentioned below:

• Improved general stability of Safari
• Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

Its good to see that it includes improved stability of Safari, so hopefully it should reduce the iPhone Safari crashes further though iPhone firmware 2.2 had reduced it to some extent.

If you have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone then updating your iPhone with the latest firmware is not recommended at least until the iPhone Dev Team have not released the latest version of PwnageTool, QuickPwn which can jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2.1 and yellowsn0w to unlock iPhone 3G.

Folks, if you do not fall in the above category and are planning to update to the latest firmware, please do let us know how it goes.

Update 1:

Dev team has just updated their blog to say:

Please DO NOT update. We will investigate and report back to you ASAP.

Update 2:

The firmware update also updates the modem firmware, after the update it is 02.30.03 from 02.28.00 which means that users who have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone should avoid the firmware update.

Emoji icons hack still seems to work.

Update 3:

Netshare is working fine after the update.

Update 4:

As per this Apple discussion thread a nasty SMS related bug has been fixed which was not documented in the release notes. The bug which suddenly prevented users from sending SMS text messages on the iPhone 3G. So if you received the message "Error Sending Message" while attempting to sending an SMS and have upgraded to the latest firmware update, let us know if it has resolved the issue.

In case of iPod Touch users, iPhone firmware 2.2.1 will fix the issue that caused some Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio files to skip during playback

Update 5 (January 27, 2009):

The Dev Team has confirmed that iPhone firmware 2.2.1 Breaks Software Method to Unlock iPhone 3G.

I will keep you posted as soon as I have any more details to share, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks.

    I did the same thing…did the upgrade hours before talking to someone about jailbreaking. Decided to go ahead and do it, and figured out that I couldn't now. Is it possible to downgrade?

  9. MARIO says:

    I'd never jaibroken my iPhone, the reason why is because all the features I've ever need are either part of the base setup or are in the iTunes store. That said I have no problems when it comes to updates of firmware, but after trying to run the update it took roughly 2 hours to do the backup and when the updating process started it gave me an error. It says something like "Could not run update because iPhone drop the connection". I restarted the process again and the same thing happened. Something important to say is that I turn on Airplane Mode always while running updates to make sure nobody will call me in the middle of the process.
    Is really funny to see something like that, it seems like Apple will need to release a patch to make it work like it should.

  10. iPhoneHacks says:

    Hey Mario,

    We just posted an article that the describes the problem you had reported and how to fix it and the way to avoid it going forward.

    Thanks for reporting the problem.

  11. Packard says:

    WTF!! The fix some bugs, but adds some others!!
    I found one new bug in this firmware version (2.2.1)!!
    THE MUSIC SORTING!!! (the Artists/Albums and Tracks lists has wrong sorting!!) For Example:
    (look what happends with "T" Artists)

    S =======================
    Steve Vai
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    T =======================
    Tanghetto
    B =======================
    The Beatles
    The Bolshoi
    C =======================
    The Cranberries
    M =======================
    The Magic Numbers
    U =======================
    U2
    UB40
    Ursula

    Before update to this version the album/artist sorting was ok!

    Help anybody. Open to all suggestions
    I have a hacked tmobile iphone 1G. I updated from 1.1 to 2.2…(after about 4 months I started getting this "error sending message" when texting. This started about 2 weeks ago. Now I updated to 2.2.1 and I am still not able to text. wtf.
    Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this so called bug?

  13. moon says:

    Hi I recently updated a 1g T-mobile to 2.2.1 (5h11a). from 2.0 Main [ssue I have is that the whole system will constanly crash and require reboot if not in use. should i downgrade or reinstall.

  14. iPhoneHacks says:

    Hey moon,

    It would be better to restore your iPhone using iTunes rather than
    downgrading. But first take a backup of your iPhone by connecting it to
    iTunes so you can sync your personal data from the backup once you have
    restored your iPhone.

  15. moon says:

    Restore meaning go back to 2.1 or try 2.2.0?

  16. iPhoneHacks says:

    Since you have already updated your iPhone with firmware 2.2.1, restore it
    again using firmware 2.2.1 rather than using an older firmware.

  17. chase1209 says:

    Not sure what to think about whats going on with my iPhone. Yesterday, I restored to factory settings due to some issues I was having with my phone. I uploaded the latest software from Apple, via iTunes, restored my phone then immediately used the pwnage 2.2.5 tool to jailbreak my 3G iPhone again. It worked even though my baseband is now 02.30.00, which is associated with 5H11A; but my phone reads, 5H11.
