Step-by-Step Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn (Windows)

The iPhone Dev team released their much awaited software solution to unlock iPhone 3G couple of days back.

However to install their yellowsn0w application to unlock iPhone 3G, you need to first jailbreak iPhone 3G.

So here is a step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn for Windows users, on the same lines as the step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn for Mac users.

Some important points to note before we start:

  • Hacking your iPhone 3G could void its warranty.
  • Since one of the important requirements to unlock iPhone 3G is to upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2 (as it exclusivley works with baseband firmware 02.28.00 which comes bundled with firmware 2.2), you need to be aware that iPhone firmware 2.2 breaks Turbo SIM (in case you are using it) - the hardware method to unlock iPhone 3G so if Dev team's software method which is still in beta does not work you might not be able to use your iPhone 3G.

Preparatory steps before jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.

  1. Please take a backup of your iPhone, refer to this post for more details.
  2. Since Dev team's unlocking solution works exclusively with baseband firmware 02.28.00, you will need to upgrade your iPhone 3G to iPhone firmware 2.2 without preserving its baseband. You can check your firmware and modem firmware(baseband) versions via Settings->General->About and look for Version and Modem Firmware.
  3. Please ensure that you have upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.0.2.
  4. Please download QuickPwn for Windows from this link and unzip its contents in a folder.
  5. Please download firmware 2.2 for iPhone 3G using this link.
  6. You need to install .Net Framework runtimes and associated files (if not already installed) for Quickpwn to work. You can download it from Microsoft's site.

If your iPhone 3G firmware Version is 2.2 (5G77) and Modem Firmware is 02.28.00 then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, you can skip directly to "Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn" below.

If you want to update your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2 then you can follow the steps mentioned below ("Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2").

You can also follow these instructions if you want to update your iPhone 3G running firmware 2.2 with preserved baseband to firmware 2.2 (5G77) and baseband firmware 02.28.00.

Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2:

  1. Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes and select your iPhone.
  2. Hold the SHIFT key and click the “Restore” button. iTunes will launch a file dialog for you to select the firmware file. Locate the iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw file for firmware 2.2 that you have downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click “Open”.
  3. iTunes will then restore your iPhone with firmware 2.2 which takes sometime, please wait for the process to complete.

Once your iPhone 3G is updated to iPhone firmware 2.2, you are ready to use the QuickPwn tool to jailbreak it.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn:

  1. Launch QuickPwn from the unzipped folder to start jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.
  2. Please ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer. QuickPwn will automatically detect it and enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
  3. In the next screen, click browse and select the iPhone firmware 2.2 that you had downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click Open.
  4. QuickPwn will check if the firmware file selected is the same as the one installed on your iPhone 3G, if valid it will enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
  5. In the next screen, you will be prompted to install Cydia, Installer (both are preselected) and if you would like to Replace the Boot Logos. Install both Cydia and Installer as you will need it to install Dev team's unlock yellowsn0w application and also to install jailbreak apps.
  6. QuickPwn will again prompt you to ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer via USB, click the blue arrow button to continue.
  7. QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.
  8. Its important that you follow the instructions carefully, if it does not work and get an error message then try again, once your iPhone 3G is in DFU mode QuickPwn will start the jailbreaking process.
  9. QuickPwn will inform you as soon as the jailbreaking process is successfully completed.
  10. After your iPhone 3G reboots, it will be jailbroken and will have Cydia and Installer apps installed and visible on your iPhone's home screen.

As always, don't forget to drop us a line to tell us how it goes.

I do admit that I'm kinda new to this stuff. I got this brand new 3g iphone locked to 02,UK as a present from a friend and I'm working in Saudi Arabia and my problem is when I power on my unit it says "INSERT VALID SIM". Is activation thru I-tunes requires the carrier sim? If NO, pls. could anyone out there who are kind enough to guide me the basics on how to do it.

  6. William Rush says:

I just read your guide. I had already jailbroken my Iphone 3G on Thursday 1/1. Prior to that, I had held out from updating my Iphone to 2.2 based upon earlier reports that said it might eliminate being able to unlock in the future. So I backed it up and let Itunes update the phone to 2.2. That left my phone with the required 2.28 Modem Firmware and 2.2 (5G77) Version. Note my phone says (5G77) not (5677)as you have in your directions. I may be mistaken but the need to download firmware 2.2 in step 5 of your guide is unnecessary if you let Itunes update the version.

I used Quickpwn exactly as your directions state and it worked perfectly.

I have not unlocked my phone because I have a contract with AT&T and don't need to use another sim. But on my next trip to Europe, I will unlock it so I can use checp sim cards purchased there.

Thanks for your many helpful columns. Keep 'em coming

  10. Jailbreak success, after some time :) says:

Ok, here's what i encountered while jailbreaking my iphone 3G:

    * I started by doing all possible checkups on jailbreaking and found that the four most important things to remember were these:

    1. Baseband firmware 02.28.00
    2. Firmware update 2.2 from Itunes
    3. If your SIM-card has a PIN-code setting available (I think most of them has) then this must be DISABLED before starting the jailbreak
    4. Make a backup using Itunes before starting!!!

The first two of these four were already setup, because if you've downloaded the latest 2.2 update from Itunes, it will be correct.

I ran the Quickpwn.exe file, very user friendly by the way, and it got to work. That's when i made the mistake of minimizing the Quickpwn program window, which i couldn't get to open again. The phone then locked itself in the mode where it reboots itself, vibrating every third minute or so. I read on an online forum that I should just hold the Home+Power button for 10 seconds, then release the Power button, then start Itunes and reset the Iphone to default factory settings. This took about 1 hour and a half and I now need to add my apps and music etc. from the Itunes library (nothing lost there by the way) to the Iphone.

Before i decided to add this back, I ran the Quickpwn.exe again, and it only took me 5 minutes or so to get it jailbroken.

For short: It worked like a charm the second time, so don't be afraid to try again!

  19. Ashish says:

Do these instructions and firmware work for non 3G iPhone? Someone please advise.

  20. iPhoneHacks says:

    @Zed Sefi,

This guide can also be used to upgrade from firmware 2.2 with preserved baseband to firmware 2.2 and baseband firmware 02.28.00 as the steps mentioned under "Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2" will upgrade your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2 without preserving the baseband firmware.

We have updated the guide to highlight the same.

  21. Irha says:

How about a guide for 2G owners? What are the pitfalls? Is it worth upgrading beyond 1.4?

If your are having problems with QuickPwn hanging at "Wait for your phone to connect in recovery mode…", but the iBoot driver is recognized in Windows, make sure the following services are started:
    -messenger
    -telnet
    -terminal services
After that everything should work smoothly.
    Good Luck!

  28. Dr.Drei says:

sick sickk first time trying it and it worked wonderfully no problems. You should have a trouble shooting section like in case something happens what can they do, but overall nice write up thanks!!!! another happy Iphone 3g customer.

For the record, i had a brand new Iphone 3G bought today (JAN 4 09) and i upgraded it on itunes using just the straight up upgrade button in itunes. And i downloaded quickpwn and it sent me an application error at first but i downloaded .Net Framework from micorosoft website and it allowed me to start quickpwn easily. Just follow the instructions carefully and you will be ok. hope this helped. THAnsk again for the maker of this forum!!

  29. Mike says:

Initially had a problem with QuickPwn not recognizing my Phone having firmware 2.2 installed. The message read something along the lines of "This version of QuickPwn can only jailbreak firmware versions >= 2.0". This problem disappeared after I rebooted the iPhone and reconnected it to the computer via USB. After that things went smoothly.

So i have to keep resetting it back to factory settings. Any1 know what the problem is and how i can fix it.

I'm LOVIN it! Guys, if you're on the fence on using either this or ziphone, go with THIS guide, DO WHAT IT SAYS without skipping steps, and you'll be done. I tried jailbreaking my brand new 3G on Saturday with ziphone…notice I said TRIED…after having to restore, re-sync, etc, I was back to an OTB iPhone. No disrespect to Zibri, I ziphone'd my 2G with no problems, but it killed my 3G. I was hesitant after the drama but tried this method, and two minutes later I'm all set. Thanks for the walk thru guys, and thanks to the DEV team! Another iPhone set free!

The window says "QuickPawn.exe – .NET Framework Initialization Error", and says "To run this application, you must first install one of the follwing versions of the .NET Framework: v2.0.50727. Contact your application publisher for instrcutions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework"

Can anyone kindly direct me on how to go about solving this problem? Thanks a million!

  42. iPhoneHacks says:

    @Malcom,

You need to install .Net Framework runtimes and associated file for Quickpwn to work. You can download it from Microsoft's site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

Hope it helps. We have also updated the post for the benefit for other readers.

i have t mobile and it won't recon. my card why?

  48. Steve says:

I cant seem to get my phone jailbroken.

when i connect my phone, Quickpwn picks it up. So i carry on, and it goes onto the screen that has installer, cydia and the pineapple logo. I choose what i want (Cydia and Installer) and when you go to the screen where you are meant to hold down the home button for 5 sec .. it stays on the first step. And doesn't go any further. I thought it might be slow or something, but i waited for like 10 minutes.

And i have to mention that the first time i tried it. It worked, and i held down home for 5 seconds .. ect. And it said the whole jailbreak thing was successful. And i could see the pineapple man look thing uploading something onto my phone. But when my phone started to reboot. It stayed on the reboot screen. And it wouldnt move from that screen. So i restored it to factory settings. And now when i try quickpwn it doesn't work (what i explained earlier).

Ive searched the net and theres quite a few people with same kinda problem. Is there a solution?

    Would really appreciate it.

Sorry if i haven't explained it properly. If you need anymore details let me know.

    Many Thanks.
