The iPhone Dev team released their much awaited software solution to unlock iPhone 3G couple of days back.
However to install their yellowsn0w application to unlock iPhone 3G, you need to first jailbreak iPhone 3G.
So here is a step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn for Windows users, on the same lines as the step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn for Mac users.
Some important points to note before we start:
- Hacking your iPhone 3G could void its warranty.
- Since one of the important requirements to unlock iPhone 3G is to upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2 (as it exclusivley works with baseband firmware 02.28.00 which comes bundled with firmware 2.2), you need to be aware that iPhone firmware 2.2 breaks Turbo SIM (in case you are using it) - the hardware method to unlock iPhone 3G so if Dev team's software method which is still in beta does not work you might not be able to use your iPhone 3G.
- This guide is to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2. If you have updated your iPhone 3G to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 then check out our updated step-by-step guided for firmware 2.2.1. If you want to preserve the firmware 2.2 baseband while updating to firmware 2.2.1 then check out our step-by-step guide of using PwnageTool.
- This guide is for Windows users, Mac users can refer to this step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn (Mac).
Preparatory steps before jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.
- Please take a backup of your iPhone, refer to this post for more details.
- Since Dev team's unlocking solution works exclusively with baseband firmware 02.28.00, you will need to upgrade your iPhone 3G to iPhone firmware 2.2 without preserving its baseband. You can check your firmware and modem firmware(baseband) versions via Settings->General->About and look for Version and Modem Firmware.
- Please ensure that you have upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.0.2.
- Please download QuickPwn for Windows from this link and unzip its contents in a folder.
- Please download firmware 2.2 for iPhone 3G using this link.
- You need to install .Net Framework runtimes and associated files (if not already installed) for Quickpwn to work. You can download it from Microsoft's site.
If your iPhone 3G firmware Version is 2.2 (5G77) and Modem Firmware is 02.28.00 then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, you can skip directly to "Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn" below.
If you want to update your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2 then you can follow the steps mentioned below ("Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2").
You can also follow these instructions if you want to update your iPhone 3G running firmware 2.2 with preserved baseband to firmware 2.2 (5G77) and baseband firmware 02.28.00.
Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2:
- Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes and select your iPhone.
- Hold the SHIFT key and click the “Restore” button. iTunes will launch a file dialog for you to select the firmware file. Locate the iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw file for firmware 2.2 that you have downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click “Open”.
- iTunes will then restore your iPhone with firmware 2.2 which takes sometime, please wait for the process to complete.
Once your iPhone 3G is updated to iPhone firmware 2.2, you are ready to use the QuickPwn tool to jailbreak it.
Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn:
- Launch QuickPwn from the unzipped folder to start jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.
- Please ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer. QuickPwn will automatically detect it and enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
- In the next screen, click browse and select the iPhone firmware 2.2 that you had downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click Open.
- QuickPwn will check if the firmware file selected is the same as the one installed on your iPhone 3G, if valid it will enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
- In the next screen, you will be prompted to install Cydia, Installer (both are preselected) and if you would like to Replace the Boot Logos. Install both Cydia and Installer as you will need it to install Dev team's unlock yellowsn0w application and also to install jailbreak apps.
- QuickPwn will again prompt you to ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer via USB, click the blue arrow button to continue.
- QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.
- Its important that you follow the instructions carefully, if it does not work and get an error message then try again, once your iPhone 3G is in DFU mode QuickPwn will start the jailbreaking process.
- QuickPwn will inform you as soon as the jailbreaking process is successfully completed.
- After your iPhone 3G reboots, it will be jailbroken and will have Cydia and Installer apps installed and visible on your iPhone's home screen.

yea i was looking at this page when it started but i just did what it said even after it had already started counting and it worked fine
SO, i was unlocking my iphone 3g. I did everything. It showed me on the computer that everything was completed and wait for the phone to reboot. so i waited for about 30 minutes and nothing happened. it was on the pineapple logo all that long. so i disconnect and played around with it. it wountt turn on no more, and somehow i got this only guy cartoon with his hands up and with the words npebea! I NEED HELP, any one? please

My Iphone 3G says it's running 2.2.1 (5H11) with modem firmware 02.30.03 will this work for my devise or not?
I followed these instructions and it all worked fine. Apart from my Iphone now has no signal, so i cannot make calls or send texts. I'm in the UK on O2 if that makes a difference.

I have been able to jailbreak my 3g however I am not able to use the call screen anymore, when I click on it it'll show up for 2-3 secs and disappear again. I can make calls via going through my phonebook but again it won't show the call screen…. Has anyone encountered the same problem? Would appreciate any advice, thanks.

my advice to you is before using quickpawn…update your iphone to 2.2,even that it shows that your using v2.2 already.still update it.the link will help a lot.

This is my first time trying to do this. So I hold down the home button for 5 seconds and keep it held down for the next step. When I hold down the power button in conjunction with home, my iphone turns off after 6 seconds. Am I doing something wrong?

i had a problem with mine, it was jailbroken and everything was working fine downloaded soem apps from cydia, but then my apps from teh apps store stopped working they jusy wouldnt load up i deleted them and reinstalled them but after awhiile they stopped working again, anyone know why or how i can fix this??

I bought an UNLOCKED iPhone 3G and updated it with with firmware version 2.2.1 (5H11) and modem firmware 02.30.03. If I jailbreak my phone using QuickPwn, will it still remain unlocked?
So I went a head and followed everything step by step and it seemed to have worked perfect!…..till I made a phone call. Seems that for some reason after the jail break the away from face function that re-activates the phone in call stopped working. The screen would not even light up regardless of buttons being pushed and the call could not be ended. There were periods where the screen would light briefly but would not be responsive to touch, so I'm restore to factory and hoping this settles the issue… unless someone has a suggestion?

and tried to follow the procedure. Actually, I can skip to start at QuickPwn but I just hold SHIFT Key and restore my iPhone which was unnecessary….T_T
Now, it's not fine because it shows that I have to insert an UNLOCK SIM to activate the phone but I didn't have it. So, is there any suggestion for my issue?

dammit… i can't update the firmware through itunes without a sim in it… it might already have 2.2 on it but i can't tell. The iphone says insert valid sim with no pin lock.

Instructions seem precise and informative – but after the very last step and the iPhone reboots (as with a few others ) my iPhone just sits with the logo screen.
1s time i didnt enable boot logo's as a result i sat lookin at the apple and 2nd time round i did choose the boot logo's option and i sat then looking at the pineapple logo, – i've left the iPhone connect for at least 10 minutes aftre the process and noticed the device rebooted of it's ow accord twice about 5 minutes apart… ???? any idea's
