Apple released iPhone firmware 2.2.1 yesterday which included minor bug fixes and improvements as per the release notes.
However, it looks like there was another reason for releasing the latest firmware. The Dev Team who had warned against updating to the latest firmware has confirmed that iPhone firmware 2.2.1 breaks the "injection hole" that they had used in their application yellowsn0w to modify the firmware which had helped to successfully unlock iPhone 3G.
MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team who had released World's Software method to unlock iPhone 3G on 1st Jan 2009 had this to say over Twitter: for *jailbreak* purposes 2.2.1 is fine for all including ipt2g. But it BREAKS the yellowsn0w soft *unlock* for iPhone 3G it's not surprising that they fixed injection hole for yellowsn0w, it is surprising to see a "silent" update the iPhone 2G baseband is untouched .. I *think* they've stopped all development of it :) last update for it was 8 months ago
He has also broadcasted a video on Qik to explain what it means if you upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2.1.
As we had reported yesterday, iPhone firmware 2.2.1 also updates the baseband (modem firmware) from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03 thus breaking the software method to unlock iPhone 3G.
Options if you have already Upgraded to iPhone Firmware 2.2.1:
So if you have upgraded your jailbroken and unlocked iPhone to firmware 2.2.1 (or just about a new iPhone which came pre-installed with firmware 2.2.1), then you are left with the following options depending on your version of the iPhone:
1st gen iPhone: Since the update does not touch the baseband of the 1st gen iPhone your unlock will remain in place. However to jailbreak your 1st gen iPhone you will need to wait for the dev team to release updated versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools which will let you jailbreak your 1st gen iPhone running firmware 2.2.1.
iPhone 3G: The Dev team should soon release updated versions of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools to jailbreak your iPhone 3G running firmware 2.2.1. But since the latest firmware updates iPhone 3G's baseband to 02.30.03, you will not be able to unlock it. You will need to wait for some time for the Dev team can unlock baseband 02.30.03.
Options if you have NOT Upgraded to iPhone Firmware 2.2.1:
In case you have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone but haven't upgraded to the latest firmware then then your options based on the version of your iPhone are mentioned below:
1st Gen iPhone:
If you do not care about jailbreaking but only worried about unlocking your 1st gen iPhone then you can go ahead and update your 1st gen iPhone as the update does not touch the baseband of the 1st gen iPhone so your unlock will remain in place.
If you care about jailbreaking then you need to wait for the dev team to release updated versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools which will let you jailbreak your 1st gen iPhone running firmware 2.2.1.
iPhone 3G:
Please avoid updating your iPhone with the latest firmware until the iPhone Dev Team have not released the latest version of PwnageTool. The latest version of PwnageTool for iPhone firmware 2.2.1 will help you to safely upgrade only the iPhone firmware to 2.2.1 and not the modem firmware.
Lets hope most of you had read our post yesterday or read this one before updating your iPhone with the latest firmware.
The cat and mouse game between Apple and the dev team continues. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Update:
These comments by MuscleNerd over at Dev Team's blog should clarify things further, we have also updated the post accordingly:
Since this update doesn't touch the iPhone 2G baseband, your unlock patch will remain in place. So for iPhone 2G owners who care only about keeping their unlock -- not about jailbreaking -- you can take this update right now.

Apple is starting to piss me off. Do they have nothing better to do then changing the baseband. Come on Apple eventually your going to have to unlock these phones anyway. Its our phone, we paid for them. FU for being such asses.
Why don't you settle down ed. You had a choice to purchase the phone, they didn't force you into using their products. If you don't like it, go get yourself a blackberry. They do these kinds of things for reasons that your tiny little brain will never understand.
is the official unlocked, jailbroken iphone 3g affected?
There is no "official" unlock or jailbreak. Apple does not support it.
i updated to 2.2.1 and now my phone is locked again and i can't use it !
i tried to restore it to the previous firmwares but all of them don't work! what should i do, i am phoneless now
is there no solutions to restore my 3g iphone to the older version 2.2.0 ???? please reply to my mail if anyone have any solution to my request
DUDE! what part of DO NOT EVER UPDATE your iphone unless you are 150% sure it will work dont you get? Now youve gotta wait… for now, enjoy your iphone-touch.
So if we dumb a**es did do the update to 2.2.1….. we are stuck with it? We can not downgrade back to 2.2. If so how? Thanks for your help.
how do i down grade my firmware back to 2.2 because i upgraded it to 2.2.1
Just to make sure I have this straight. If we are just jailbroken on the iPhone 3G, but not unlocked (and don't care about unlocking), we are OK to upgrade to 2.2.1 and re-jailbreak? Gracias.
soon there will be solutions to jailbreak the v. 2.2.1 it will probably take some days…
Even if you are looking to only jailbreak iPhone 3G and not unlock it, it is advisable to wait for the Dev team to release the updated versions of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2.1 as the current version of the tools cannot jailbreak iPhone running firmware 2.2.1.
The Dev Team has mentioned that they will be releasing the updated version of the tools soon.
I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G but don't care about unlocking it. I upgraded to the new firmware 2.2.1 and it seemed to break all of my jailbroken apps. I tried to downgrade my firmware to 2.2 but I get an error every time. So am I stuck with a non-jailbroken iPhone until winpwn or quickpwn is updated? Thanks for your help.
Hey TheChameleon,
Unfortunately, you will now have to wait for the Dev Team to release updated version of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2.1.
We will let you know if there is a way to downgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2 to jailbreak it in the meantime.
…I remember having problems downgrading before, and I had to go back to an older version of iTunes for it to work.
You can downgrade the firmware, but not the baseband (which is what you unlockers need to be concerned about.) Unfortunately for you, once the baseband has been updated there is no going back. And while I fully suspect that the dev team will have this jailbroken in no time, it will likely be months (or never) before you see an unlock available. It took them several months to figure it out the first time and Apple has just completely eliminated the loophole that allowed them to achieve it. You unlockers who prematurely updated may want to start shopping for a new phone.
ive just got an iphone 2g that is jailbroken and unlocked on firmware 1.1.4 is there a way to upgrade to 2.2 and avoid the 2.2.1 update then i should be able to use quickpwn 2.2 to unlock it after
please help thank you!!!!!!!

AB.
Since I am not having problem with safari…so far… gonna forget about this updates.. coz i am very happy with my iPhone 3G unlocked using yellowsn0w…
Is it possible to use a turbo sim ?
Hey guys i just found a way to downgrade the new 2.2.1 firmware. I just did. I had to restore my phone last night and by mistake the new firmware was installed in my jail broken 3g. and this is what I did.
download an older version of the firmware (2.0.1) for example, you also need the last version of quickpwn. once you have this open itunes and open quickpwn, and on itunes while hitting "Shift" click restore and look for the older firmware you downloaded; and while itunes is getting the info to get stared go to Quickpwn and run it with the same firmware you downloaded, BOTH PROGRAMS HAVE TO BE RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME. after this quickpwn is going to procced to jailbrake.
I have an Italian set, unlockd by default. I jailbroke the phone. Now whether will 2.2.1 update lock my phone or just un-jailbreak?
love this cat and mouse game…keeps dev team going…
musclenerd gad bless you….waiting for your new yell0wsnow……

but it won't downgrade the baseband… so you can't use the phone, right ?
Yeah, it won't downgrade the baseband, so you will not be able to unlock it. But you will be able to use it with AT&T if you have a valid iPhone contract.
As per Alan it is possible to use the turbo SIM mentioned above, however we don't recommend using it.
what is the latest on this … i accidentally upgraded the firmware to 2.2.1 and modem baseband is now 02.30.03. Is there a cure for this yet?
Hey Alan,
So that turbo sim unlocks the 2.2.1? and can leave my iphone 3g okay to use with t mobile and cydia??
Apple didn't sell the phones retail they sold them subsidized to use with the carrier they assigned it to..
so NO. they don't owe you the right to unlock the phones. And you chose the phone knowing this fully..
So don't blame them. It was a risk and you took it.
Please explain steps in more detail… I have this problem now.
hello everybody ,i had done the jailbrake and unlock thing to my iphone with yellowsnow and it was working perfectly but than i have upgraded my iphone 3g to 2.2.1 and managed somehow to downgrade it to 2.2 and jailbrake it again.. but my modem firmware is still 02.30.03 from the previous firmware upgrade 2.2.1 .. (how) can i downgrade the modem firmware to 02.28 so i can successfully unlock my iphone 3g again … will it work yellowsnow again on this modem firmware 02.30.03??? thanks in advance many thanks for the unlock tips
Hey Alex,
Unfortunately, there is currently no way to downgrade the baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00.
You will need to wait for the Dev team to unlock baseband 02.30.03 or magically figure out a way to downgrade the baseband.
Hello, I have a brand new iPhone locked to Fido which has never been activated so it probably does not have Baseband 2.30.03. I have never connected this iPhone to iTunes. Can someone give me specific instructions on how I should activate it so that the baseband stays preserved and I can run yellowsn0w to unlock it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i like many other eager 'updating ppls' have upgraded to 2.2.1 without realizing its devastating result. . locking the iphone 3G i noe its not possible at the moment but plez find a solution soon .. . .=/ much thnks in advance. . .
turbo sim is that the best way to unlock the 3G iphone, better then software unlock ????
Turbo sims generally suck and are completely unrelliable so how you can recommend one over a software unlock beggars belief?
did the baseband downgraded also????
hey guys! as many as you i'm super bummed that i can't use my iphone – after upgrading without reading the WARNINGS.
i found this website that claims to have a software (for 29.99) that can unlock any iphone version including 2.2.1. has anyone used this type of software… i've been iphone-less for about 4weeks and i'm about to go crazy. desperation is starting to kick in, and just might try this sites product.
any advice before i give it a shot???
hi j valdes
i bought software from a site for 19.99 when 2.2 first came out. the software provided only jailbroke the firmware for 3g iphone and the unlock software was for iphone 2g. i think its a scam.
i've currently got 2.2.1 and im, using a turbosim until trhe dev team can unlock 2.2.1.
hopefully they will do it soon.
thanks for the reply Ricky!
i had a turbosim card and it was so useless! sometimes it would work and sometimes i had no reception what so ever. so right now i'm back to my old dash tmobile phone. which feels so weird after having the iphone for so long.
Does anybody know if i can downgrade my modem firmware to 02.28.00 from 02.30.03?
When i got the phone it was band new in the box not open so is it still possible to downgrade?
