iPhone Trick: Quick and Easy Way to Turn Off Auto-Correct Feature

iPhone - Auto correct feature trick

I really like the auto-correct feature of the iPhone. In my opinion it wouldn't have been convenient to use iPhone's revolutionary virtual keyboard if it wasn't for the auto-correct feature.

But there are times when you are tying a lot of slang or text in another language; you don't want the auto-correct feature to kick in.

Folks at Lifehacker have published a quick and easy trick to turn off the auto-correct feature while you are typing.

Apple provided users with the ability to turn on/off the auto-correct feature in Keyboard settings (Settings->General->Keyboard) in iPhone firmware 2.2.

I like the auto-correct feature when I am writing an email but prefer it to be off when I am on Instant messenger as I end up using a lot of slang words while chatting.

But turning on or turning off the auto-correct feature each time using iPhone's Settings app is quite time consuming (so end up keeping it turned on all the time).

So the tip by the Lifehacker reader is quite useful as you can use it anytime.

"A bilingual reader of our Aussie cousin, Lifehacker Australia, found that by typing out a "z," then touching and dragging to back up the cursor behind it, he could write as far outside the constraints of his native land's language as he wanted. Typing behind the Z leaves auto-correct unable to guess what word you could possibly be forming—"Restaurantz?" it asks, with a resigned shrug—so it leaves you alone. Works on any iPhone/touch app that features spelling correction, actually."

Actually this trick works with any letter/word and isn't specific to the letter "z" . If you move the cursor directly behind any letter/word then you should be able to type without the auto-correct feature correcting you.

As always let us know how it goes in the comments and if you found this iPhone trick useful.

  1. just by reading the short cut it doesnt sound much like an easier way to me, i think its just easier to add the slang to the dictionary that way when you use it no matter in an email or in a text it knows what u meant and doesnt try to auto correct u

This is so you don't have to go to settings if your in the middle of typing something.

  6. Dwain says:

why not just tap the text when the auto correct feature shows.. this works for me.. it is much simpler. :)

  7. metromepmb says:

because its annoying to try and tap the little x and is annoying each time you want to not be corrected and stop just to touch an x

  8. Dirk says:

just add the slang to your dictionary… seems simpler

or turn the damn "feature" off :)

  11. Blaine says:

I'm actually used to tapping the "x" when Im typing. I've used the VK long enough that I pretty much know what words it will try to change, It's just reflex now, tap the "x" at the end of the word. Nice tip though…

no they are saying its nice to use at time but sometimes its annoying when you dont want it or you are using words not in dictionary. even if you hit the x to "add" to dictionary that doesnt last long. same with swear words. the best way to add words to the dictionary is to create a fake phone contact and under description add every word you may use that will pop up spell check – names, swear words, slang etc. keep adding to this list and this will be your custom dictionary. if the words or names are in your contacts they get added to your apple dictionary and they wont get spell checked. sounds crazy but try it it works

I need someone's expertise and in return I will forward a $145.00 program by E-stealth. If anyone is familiar with this program please drop me a line. Just to refresh your memory, E-stealth software allows you to monitor another phone. It enables you to intercept all text messages as well as listen in on phone calls without being detected. Best of all you do not need the other phone that is being monitored, the entire software is downloaded to your phone. Basicallly, it works off of bluetooth. My problem is that Im not fully understanding of computer terms. Installing the software is to far advanced for me. If someone is willing to assist me with the application, I will be more than willing to pass on the program.

There's a simpler way to do this for languages that I happened upon recently.

I was bored one day and decided to see what my iPhone would be like in French. I quickly tired of it, and changed it back to English. The language changing process takes about five minutes probably for two. I didn't record, this is just a guess. Anyways, when I changed my phone back to English, I went to send a text message and noticed another button. It's next to the 123 button and has the world clock symbol on it. I clicked on this button and the keyboard was rearranged and the spacebar read Français (France). Now I can text bilingually!

The only difficult thing is that it changes the keyboard layout to French, which is not the american (english?) qwerty layout, but you get used to it quicker than you may think.

    easy for you to say.

  23. hanzie says:

Thank God! I have been freed from my idiotic iPhone's autocorrect!

I learned how to spell in grade school.

F*****g Apple, no f*****g manual. Pricks.

  24. Qwertyv says:

This is great! Yes you could tap on the word every time to add it to your dictionary, or you could backspace and retype the word or you could turn autocorrect off.

However this is the perfect solution for those that use a lot of slang or multiple languages, but still want autocorrect on.

For example I type text messages and emails in two different languages. I may be texting or e-mailing one person in english and another in spanish. I don’t want to be turning auto-correct function on and off every time, when I want to keep it on for English and off for Spanish. Otherwise every word I type in Spanish would have to be added to the dictionary or I would have to backspace and retype every word.
