if you want to update your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1 but at the same time preserve its baseband so that you can also unlock it then you should follow our step-by-step guide to use Dev Team's PwnageTool.
But If you don't want to unlock your iPhone 3G now or anytime in the future and only want to jailbreak it to install jailbreak iPhone apps then you can update your iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2.1 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 to jailbreak it.
Here is our step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows users updated for iPhone firmware 2.2.1.
Some important points to note before we start:
- Hacking your iPhone 3G could void its warranty.
- You should NOT use this guide if you want to unlock your iPhone 3G. You should use PwnageTool as it preserves the baseband, you can checkout our step-by-step guide to use Dev Team's PwnageTool.
- This guide is to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2.1.
- This guide is for Windows users, Mac users can refer to this step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn (Mac).
Preparatory steps before jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.
1. Please take a backup of your iPhone, refer to this post for more details.
2. Please ensure that you have upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.0.2.
3. Please download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows from any of these links and unzip its contents in a folder:
- http://foskarulla.com/QuickPwn-225-2.zip

5. You need to install .Net Framework runtimes and associated files (if not already installed) for Quickpwn to work. You can download it from Microsoft's site.
If your iPhone 3G firmware Version is 2.2.1 (5H11) and Modem Firmware is 02.30.03 then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, you can skip directly to "Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn" below.
If you want to update your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1 then you can
follow the steps mentioned below ("Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone
Firmware 2.2.1").
Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2.1:
- Please note this method does NOT preserve the baseband, so by updating to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 using this method will result in your iPhone 3G's baseband will also get updated from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03. Dev Team's software unlocking application yellowsn0w does NOT work with baseband 02.30.03, it only works with baseband 02.28.00.
- Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes and select your iPhone.
- Hold the SHIFT key and click the “Restore” button. iTunes will launch a file dialog for you to select the firmware file. Locate the iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw file that you have downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click “Open”.
- iTunes will then restore your iPhone with firmware 2.2.1 which takes sometime, please wait for the process to complete.
Once your iPhone 3G is updated to iPhone firmware 2.2.1, you are ready to use the QuickPwn tool to jailbreak it.
Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2:
- Launch QuickPwn from the unzipped folder to start jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.
- Please ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer. QuickPwn will automatically detect it and enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
- In the next screen, click browse and select the iPhone firmware 2.2.1 that you had downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click Open.
- QuickPwn will check if the firmware file selected is the same as the one installed on your iPhone 3G, if valid it will enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
- In the next screen, you will be prompted to install Cydia, Installer (both are preselected) and if you would like to Replace the Boot Logos. Install both Cydia and Installer as you will need it to install Dev team's unlock yellowsn0w application and also to install jailbreak apps.
- QuickPwn will again prompt you to ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer via USB, click the blue arrow button to continue.
- QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.
- Its important that you follow the instructions carefully, if it does not work and get an error message then try again, once your iPhone 3G is in DFU mode QuickPwn will start the jailbreaking process.
- QuickPwn will inform you as soon as the jailbreaking process is successfully completed.
- After your iPhone 3G reboots, it will be jailbroken and will have Cydia and Installer apps installed and visible on your iPhone's home screen.
As always, don't forget to drop us a line to tell us how it goes.

Hi I jailbreak went fine. But all apps I installed I can't open for some reason. I used instalous to download and installed those apps. BeejiveIM can't be opened, but I can change the setting in the setting app. what I did wrong?
Nothing, i've had the same problem w/ 2.2.1
IT SUCKS!! Ur better off just going bck to 2.2 because none of the jailbroke apps download or work right.
Hi,
Didn't work for me as well. Will wait for dev team make progress and unlock 2.2.1. Good luck guys….
Probably try rolling it back. iPhone Hacks has a tutorial on it but I'd just buy the app. I know its expensive but chances are, your getting your music for free and most else so why not just pay a little
If not, wait for an update for Installous.
What Repo offers Installous? I can never find it. (Just out of curiousity)
*curiosity

What was the issue?
Uhhh… I just upgraded to 2.2.1 and the Dev Team has unlocked it, you just need to find an .ipsw that preserves the baseband.
Hey my iphone stay only in reboot mode after trying to jailbreak! how can i fix my phone? it does not work anymore i need help…..
Only thing I can think of to do is hold down the home and hold/power button until it reboots. Whats on the screen when its frozen? A Pineapple or is it the regular apple?
Also… Did you get the .ipsw from apple or did you get it elsewhere?
DevTeam will never release PwnageTool for Windows users. They didn't do that since their latest Windows edition for FW 2.0 and we have been waiting for long time to get this and it didn't come out!
I guess my only hope is to find a preserved ipsw files that was created on a MAC. Here we go again, how can we trust any ipsw that's said to be preserved when we find its torrent file? And No, I don't have any friend who got a MAC.
This is so depressing but I still appreciate the amazing work that DevTeam have done for all of us.
Hi, I got the same problem after jailbreaking. The reboot just stay there with an apple logo and never seems to go away nor reboot itself….the whole jailbreak just freeze with an apple logo. Who else have encountered the same problem?
Same question. Where did you get your .ipsw?
After trying to jailbreak my iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2.1 (5G77) and upon reboot it was stuck at the 'Apple' screen. I tried pressing the home key quickly once or twice which didn't work. I tried holding the home key for about 4 seconds which didn't have any immediate result. Then I held the power button for about 2 seconds. This last seemed to do the trick and I got the lock screen.
Everything on the phone worked fine except for two things. First the Phone app. was broken. It would start but then after 1 second it would die even if I didn't touch it. Second, every time I rebooted the phone it would get stuck with the Apple diplayed.
About the 5th time I happened to reboot I couldn't get it past that screen.
So, I followed the restore procedure (Hold home button for 5 seconds, hold home and power for 10, hold home for 30) and did a shift-resture in iTunes to put the original firmware back. During this process it seemed to save a copy of my firmware. I don't know if this was the original firmware or the jailbroken one that it was replacing. It also told me there was an update and asked if I wanted to replace that. I said yes.
After much waiting (iTunes takes a lot longer to restore the firmware then QuickPwn took to replace it.) I had a phone with the original applications and my custom settings. It didn't have my third-party applications because I had turned off the auto-sync before this whole process and I hadn't done a sync after the restore.
All good, my phone was usable again. I then went through the jailbreak process again, with SUCCESS (Yeah!). I now have a jailbroken iPhone.
So, two things are different, I went through the iTunes update firmware process and I had it install the new firmware [2.2.1 (5H11)]. This past Sunday, this page said that the process worked with firmware 2.2.1 (5G77) but, it now says to use 5H11. I don't know if Dev. Team always just recommend the latest version. But, it is possible that this jailbreak worked with earlier shipped versions of the 5G77 firmware but that Apple then made a change so that the later ones don't work (I just bought my phone Dec. 26th.) If this is true then version 5G77 may or may not work. But, it seems that upgrading to 5H11 is a much more certain route.
Hi everyone ive just bought an iphone3g and just want to jailbreak, dont need to unlock. should i update to 2.2 or 2.2.1 firmware. By the way im on XP. Do i need .net frameworks and so on??
Please help!
thanks
Hey Metal Man,
There has been no change on this page. iPhone firmware 2.2 was 5G77 and
firmware 2.2.1 is 5H11.
Which version of QuickPwn were you using 2.2.1 or 2.2.5-2? Had you upgraded
to firmware 2.2.1 before using QuickPwn? That might help in solving the
puzzle.
Hey Stargateonly,
Had you upgraded to firmware 2.2.1 before using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2?
Geogo3r & iphonehack,
I have downloaded n upgraded the firmware to 2.2.1 from apple itune before using the QuickPwn 2.2.5-2. I have also downloaded the .ipsw from the iphonehack site and followed all the steps in performing the jailbreak. so what is missing??
My friend have done the same and encountered the same problem.
Maybe the instruction need to be more clear, especially towards the end of the process.
Since then, I have managed to reboot and install back to the original (before jailbreak ) status and get back all my datas/contacts. Will wait for a more stable jailbreak firmware before doing it again.
Hey Stargateonly,
That's strange, can you tell me which step do you get stuck?
Did you get past step 7, 8 and 9?
Hi anyone,
After hearing so much about the jailbreaking, how do we know whether the iphone is lock or unlock?
Is jailbreaking possible to perform despite the iphone is in lock or unlock status?
If jailbreaking can only perform on a unlocked set, then could the jailbreaking process include a check item to confirm the phone is lock or unlock status before performing the rest of the process.
Please comment.
Thanks.
There is no such restriction.
You need to jailbreak your iPhone first to unlock.
Using this guide you first upgrade to the latest firmware.
It does not matter if you have unlocked your iPhone or jailbroken it.
After upgrading you need to use tools like QuickPwn to jailbreak it.

hi iphonehacks,
Thks for the advise.
So what might have gone wrong in the jailbreak of 2.2.1 version?
Why is it that when it comes to the last stage of reboot that the apple logo keeps appearing in the Home screen?
Something wrong with the QuickPwn 2.2.5-2?
Currently have the latest firmware 2.2.1(5H11)with Modem FW 02.30.03.
Please enlighten.
Think I posted this on the wrong page before:
I bought an UNLOCKED iPhone 3G and updated it with with firmware version 2.2.1 (5H11) and modem firmware 02.30.03. If I jailbreak my phone using QuickPwn, will it still remain unlocked?
Dev Team's yellowsn0w application cannot unlock baseband 02.30.03.
You can only use QuickPwn to jailbreak iPhone 3G.
Ideally you should have used their PwnageTool to update your iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2.1, it would have jailbroken it and also preserved it's baseband.

You need to tell us at which step you hit the problem to be able to figure out your problem.

I didn't unlock my phone – I bought it factory unlocked and then updated it to firmware version 2.2.1 (5H11) and modem firmware 02.30.03. I just want to ensure that my phone REMAINS UNLOCKED after I jailbreak it with QuickPwn.
Be very careful trying this. I did it, and did it right, and it still didn't work. You can get your iPhone working again though, see http://www.creationrobot.com/2009/02/recover-your-iphone/
Hi,
i am having the same problem with the apple logo appearing constantly, i just wanted to know, that i have never back up my data, and did the restore back it for you in the whole the process, bcuz u mentioned that you got ur custom settings back…
so will it automatically back up the data for me???
Hi All,
I have just "jailbreaked" my iPhone. All went well. I was very worried though once it rebooted, as i lost all contacts, settings, photos, sms's and all apps i had installed.
I reconnected it to iTunes and clicked "Restore" hoping everything would come back, and it did, except for the music i had, which isn't a problem, as it is easily reinstalled.
The only reason i wanted to jailbreak the phone was so i could forward sms messages. I can now using Bitesms. Plus there is so much more including ringtones etc.. that install immediatly.
I'm in Australia using the Optus network. All is working fine. I dont know what the installer does at this stage, but Cydia is great.
Hey Adnan,
What do you mean you have never back up your data, whenever you connect your
iPhone to your computer, iTunes takes a backup automatically.
So when you restore your iPhone from the backup, you will get your personal
data and settings.
Hi Adnan,
I got the apple logo all the time after the jailbreak is done. I tried to reset it many times but of no avail. only finally that during the constant resetting of the power button that it starts to store. And that's where I restore back to my original state of 2.2.1 firmware setting.
I have tried jailbreaking twice and same problem occurred with the Apple logo hangs there with 2 days of un-usable phones.
Anyway, something must have gone wrong during the process. For now, my iphone is still not jailbreak.
During restoring, you have an option to choose a new clean restore which restore everything in the set or restore back to your last sync stage.
Hey Raks,
You can upgrade your iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2.1 using iTunes if you don't
want to unlock it.
You can then using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows to jaibreak your iPhone 3G
running firmware 2.2.1. You need .net frameworks installed on your computer
for QuickPwn to work.
Hey Stargateonly,
Here are some solutions/workarounds that seem to have helped some users
resolve the issue you had reported:
The way it worked for me is when stuck at boot logo i opened itunes with the
phone stuck then put in recovery by holding home and power at same time till
it shuts off like normal reset but keep holding them let go of power for 2-3
sec dont let go of home though. Itunes should find it after 10-15 sec after
letting go of power but still holding home. (same process quickpwn requires
to jailbreak) Of course this requires a restore afterward so i dont know if
this is the route you might want to take and i had to set up as new without
syncing anything until after i jailbroke.

Well after many jailbreaks, and many hours stuck on apple logo, and many
restores later, i found out what i was doing wrong.
Well after every un successfull jailbreak, i would restore and sync all my
things onto my ipod touch 2.2 again and than jailbreak and fail.. all over
again 5 times. But today, i decided after restoring, i wouldnt sync anything
so my ipod would be jailbreaked empty. I did it and it worked! My ipod
started up normall after jailbreak. Now, i'm going to sync all my things
back again.

As soon as the quickpwn steps were over…i disconnected the phone from the
usb cable. restarted itunes, and then replugged my iphone again…i think
that helped too after reading it somewhere.
give it a go., it worked for me!!!!!

Please let us know if any of these methods helped resolve the problem.
Ok so I went ahead and used QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows on my factory unlocked iphone. And it seems to have worked. I followed the directions above to a tee – except for one thing – in step number 3 of the jailbreak procedure it says "In the next screen, click browse and select the iPhone firmware 2.2.1 that you had downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click Open." But I had not updated my iPhone with this file (I had updated to firmware version 2.2.1 (5H11), modem firmware 02.30.03 through the update link on iTunes and backed up my iphone). So when I got to this stage quickpawn automatically selected the .ipsw file that was stored in itunes. I went with this selection instead of the downloaded .ipsw file as it seemed the more logical choice and since I wasn't trying to preserve the baseband anyway. It worked – and my phone is still unlocked!
i have tried several times to jailbreak my iphone without success. i have the ipsw from here but it will not restore on my iphone, i get error 1602. how can i restore with the ipsw from here?
I've done all as asked. Unfortunately QuickPwn will NOT recognize my phone at all. iTunes is finding without problem. Rolling back to my old restore until I can get QuickPwn to work. Ideas?
Thanks!
I have bought iPhone yesterday from my friend. It is 5G77 and 02.28.00 and already activated. I tried to jailbreak the iPhone but unfortunately, I made a wrong process. I downloaded
iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw
and tried to follow the procedure. Actually, I can skip to start at QuickPwn but I just hold SHIFT Key and restore my iPhone which was unnecessary….T_T
Now, it's not fine because it shows that I have to insert an UNLOCK SIM to activate the phone but I didn't have it. So, is there any suggestion for my issue?
Thank you
I have the exact same problem, the jailbreak completes successfully and the phone goes into reboot mode, it just never starts back up and stays stuck at the apple logo screen, no matter what you do, it doesnt go past this stage. One thing to note that i didnt check the "replace boot logs" while jailbreaking. Im on the latest 2.2.1 firmware and latest baseband 02.30.03. Please advise.
Hi
I have updated the firmware to 2.2.1 but can jailbreak it but cannot unlock it..can anyone suggest:)
izzit true that once i jailbreak my iphone, the warrantly is void?
hey how do i go back to version 2.2 ??? im using windows xp.
thanks
You can use this guide:
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/01/stepbystep-guide-to-downgrade-from-iphone-firmware-221-to-firmware-22.html
But it will not downgrade the baseband. There is no method available to
downgrade the baseband.

Hi Dear,
Does any body knows when dave team will released the unlocking for v2.2.1 base 02.30.03 i made mistake and upgrade my iphone and change the base band aswell is thier any way i can downgrade the base band please help me thanx
Hey hasee,
Dev Team have not mentioned if they plan to unlock baseband 02.30.03. So I
guess its anybody's guess.
Stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks, we will keep you posted.
have you figured this out?
i have the same thing =(
I have an iphone 3G Version 2.2.1 (5H11) with a Modem FirmWare 02.20.03. Will the jailbreak work successfully if I use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2? or do I need to use QuickPwn 2.2.1? I am on AT&T and will like to continue with my same carrier with the same service, should I take the sim card out while I am jailbreaking? or it doesnt matter?
APPLE logo will not go away, and iTunes will not allow me to restore iPhone after I Jailbroke. It keeps giving me 2 vibrating tones about every 5 mins. Any help is greatly appreciated!
For those who are having trouble with the freezing on the apple icon.
First, restore to the 2.2.1 firmware.
Second, make sure you don't have any apps, music, photos, or videos.
Third, JAILBREAK IT!
lol. I thought my iPhone 3G was stupid or something but it just turns out of have too much stuff on there. So, my point to this is the less stuff the faster the reboot. I took everything off and the reboot was less than 2 seconds. But, when I had all my apps, videos, etc. I kept getting stuck at the apple icon reboot for like ages.
Just a little tip you might want to try. If it works for you too, then AWESOME! Have fun with your iPhone or iTouch which ever you have.
xD
