Step-by-Step Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3G running Firmware 2.2.1 using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 (Windows)

if you want to update your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1 but at the same time preserve its baseband so that you can also unlock it then you should follow our step-by-step guide to use Dev Team's PwnageTool.

But If you don't want to unlock your iPhone 3G now or anytime in the future and only want to jailbreak it to install jailbreak iPhone apps then you can update your iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2.1 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 to jailbreak it.

Here is our step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows users updated for iPhone firmware 2.2.1.

Some important points to note before we start:

  • Hacking your iPhone 3G could void its warranty.
  • This guide is to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2.1.

Preparatory steps before jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.

1. Please take a backup of your iPhone, refer to this post for more details.

2. Please ensure that you have upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.0.2.

3. Please download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows from any of these links and unzip its contents in a folder:

4. Please download firmware 2.2.1 for iPhone 3G using this link.
5. You need to install .Net Framework runtimes and associated files (if not already installed) for Quickpwn to work. You can download it from Microsoft's site.

If your iPhone 3G firmware Version is 2.2.1 (5H11) and Modem Firmware is 02.30.03 then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, you can skip directly to "Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn" below.

If you want to update your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1 then you can follow the steps mentioned below ("Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2.1").

Update your iPhone 3G to iPhone Firmware 2.2.1:

  1. Please note this method does NOT preserve the baseband, so by updating to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 using this method will result in your iPhone 3G's baseband will also get updated from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03. Dev Team's software unlocking application yellowsn0w does NOT work with baseband 02.30.03, it only works with baseband 02.28.00.
  2. Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes and select your iPhone.
  3. Hold the SHIFT key and click the “Restore” button. iTunes will launch a file dialog for you to select the firmware file. Locate the iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw file that you have downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click “Open”.
  4. iTunes will then restore your iPhone with firmware 2.2.1 which takes sometime, please wait for the process to complete.

Once your iPhone 3G is updated to iPhone firmware 2.2.1, you are ready to use the QuickPwn tool to jailbreak it.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2:

  1. Launch QuickPwn from the unzipped folder to start jailbreaking your iPhone 3G.
  2. Please ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer. QuickPwn will automatically detect it and enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
  3. In the next screen, click browse and select the iPhone firmware 2.2.1 that you had downloaded in step 5 of the preparatory steps and click Open.
  4. QuickPwn will check if the firmware file selected is the same as the one installed on your iPhone 3G, if valid it will enable the blue arrow button, click it to continue.
  5. In the next screen, you will be prompted to install Cydia, Installer (both are preselected) and if you would like to Replace the Boot Logos. Install both Cydia and Installer as you will need it to install Dev team's unlock yellowsn0w application and also to install jailbreak apps.
  6. QuickPwn will again prompt you to ensure that your iPhone 3G is connected to your computer via USB, click the blue arrow button to continue.
  7. QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.
  8. Its important that you follow the instructions carefully, if it does not work and get an error message then try again, once your iPhone 3G is in DFU mode QuickPwn will start the jailbreaking process.
  9. QuickPwn will inform you as soon as the jailbreaking process is successfully completed.
  10. After your iPhone 3G reboots, it will be jailbroken and will have Cydia and Installer apps installed and visible on your iPhone's home screen.

As always, don't forget to drop us a line to tell us how it goes.

To all those suffering from the apple / pineapple logo freezing-on-reboot problem:

You MUST restore to 2.2.1, even if the phone / touch already has 2.2.1.

I made this mistake. You must restore, THEN jailbreak.

    Hi

I picked up my iphone today and i am trying to jailbreak it but having some issues, itunes says i am running 2.2.1 5h11 i have followed your guide and have downloaded the relevant firmware and this is saved as a zip file, when i use quickpwn it does not allow me to select the file, when i change it from zip to ipsw it allows me to select the file within quickpwn but gives the following error message teh ipsw file you have chosen does not match any firmware version quickpwn supports yada yada.

Any help would be gratefrully appreciated…

I am trying to jail brake my iphone 3g, I installed everything the firmware twice, I can not find it when the the second screen comes up with the browse option? where did the file go/\

  18. The Godfather says:

For those of you who had their screen frozen after jailbreaking, what I did was download the 2.2.1 from the link on this page that is from Apple. Even though I already had 2.2.1 I figured why not. Then I restored my failed jailbreaked phone with the newly downloaded firmware, but I did not restore the backup. I then jailbreaked with quickpwnd and it worked. As I type, I'm restoring now with my prior backup and it sohuld be just fine and I should have all my contacts etc.

  19. lyn-z says:

this was so easy..worked instantly…i had no trouble what so ever but then again im a pretty technical person.

  24. Ryan says:

Hey man, i had the same problem with my iphone. Just leave your phone connected after the new image has been flashed. Give it about 10 seconds then open up itunes. After itunes is opened for about 30 sec(it will appear as if it froze up), your phone will come back to life along with your previously installed apps. Hope this helps some one. Peace and keep real.

    it doesnt work
it seem to not get any signal at all
and i cant make any phone call
    so any help?

  28. Sam Chafin says:

I did this but when i boot it up it does not do any thing but stay at the boot screen. Would someone please tell me what to do.

  29. javaman says:

This don't work. Bricks your iPhone and leaves it with a pineapple logo.

  30. Baalroo says:

It took me two tries to get this to work, this first time she froze on the load up screen (black screen with apple logo). I had to restore it to factory in iTunes, and on the seconde try it worked like a charm.

  31. javaman says:

    Finally some progress.
BTW, when I did this update, it appeared to go through the whole update scenario. Here is what went down:

    (1) On Mac – Sending 018-4443-16.dmg 22531KB
    (2) On Mac – Sending kernelcache,release.s518900x
    (3) On iPhone – Flashing NOR (Running Pineapple logo)
    (4) On iPhone – Installing Bundles
    (5) On iPhone – Syncing Filesystems
    (6) On iPhone – Rebooting
    (7) On iPhone – Pineapple logo!!!! forever

So now some good luck for me. I started with the PC page, then read the Mac page. Luckilly the Mac page had the details of how to put the phone in firmware mode. Turn off device, Turn on device with both power and home for 10 seconds, then release just power while still holding home for another 10 secs. All this while connected to itunes. This allowed me to restore my iphone via itunes to its original appleness. Next, I figure since I am no long en pineapple brick mode, that I should be able to get out of it again if I screw things up again. So this time I skipped the part in this write up where it said:

If your iPhone 3G firmware Version is 2.2.1 (5H11) and Modem Firmware is 02.30.03 then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, you can skip directly to "Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn" below.

When I first tried this process, I looked at the about screen in the iPhone and verified that this was true so I skipped straigth to jailbreaking with QuickPwn. Big mistake! Maybe this is not the case for everyone, but this was the case for me. I went ahead and did this file-style firmware update to my iPhone (even though I already had 2.2.1) anyway. Next I did the jailbreak with QuickPwn and badabing … I'm good.

  32. reza says:

why ican't execute the quickpawn program??it says encountered a problem..i've tried in 3 computers..

  33. nake says:

    HHIII All the cool guys
I followed the steps and I got the message jailbreak was successful. But my phone didn't reboot. it was stuck with the apple logo on the screen.
wait about 20 mins. nothing happened,
I ran the Quickpwn.exe again but only went two steps,my phone came back online.
all apps are running, Works fine
    Greaaaate

    Big thanks to Dev Team

  34. joe pendlebury says:

I followed all these steps however once everything had uploaded the phone rebooted as it said it should but it has just stayed on the apple icon it will not start up and it does not appear in itunes so there is nothing i can do, i have tried redoing the process and still no sucsess can anyone offer any support?

  35. Marcos says:

Just a minor suggestion for newbies, just like me (it took me several weeks to figure it out). Firmware is downloaded as .ZIP file. For QuickPwn to accept the firmware bundle, it it necessary to change the file from .ZIP to .IPSW extension (In my case, I did it through Prompt Command). As DOS doesn't seem to accept long file names, I rename the downloaded file in the Windows to "iPhone", then in the Prompt Command rename it to "iPhone.ipsw", and finally rename it in the Windows to "iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore". With this simple procedure, I was able to follow all the instructions of this tutorial.
Now my iPhone is finally jailbroken!
    Thank you veru much!!!
