MacOS iPhone Project Aims to Port Mac OS 7 to the iPhone

MacOS iPhone Project

If you enjoyed the video of Classic Mac Plus OS running on the iPhone then the news published by folks working on the MacOS Project might cheer you up as well.

Folks at MacOS iPhone Project have started porting System 7 also called Mac OS 7 to the iPhone.

They have made good progress so far and have published photos of Mac OS 7 running on the iPhone.

As per Wikipedia:

System 7 (codenamed "Big Bang" and sometimes called Mac OS 7) was a single-user graphical user interface-based operating system for Macintosh computers which was introduced on May 13, 1991 by Apple Computer. It succeeded System 6, and was the main Macintosh operating system until it was succeeded by Mac OS 8 in 1997. Features added with the System 7 release included cooperative multitasking, virtual memory, personal file sharing, an improved user interface, QuickTime, and QuickDraw 3D.

Folks working on MacOS project have commented on some of the initial challenges they have faced while porting Mac OS 7 to the iPhone. They wrote:

"This is where we ran into one of our biggest issues, the cursor, it sound simple, but apple didnt make it easy for us."

After they figured out a way to get the cursor working; they were were able to run MacPaint, MacDraw, Calculator and other system functions on the Mac OS 7 emulator on the iPhone and have posted some screenshots to backup their claim.

They are currently working to fix a problem where the Mac OS 7 emulator crashes when you try to shutdown or restart.

The project is currently work-in-progress and they are hoping to release the code soon. I am not sure if that means iPhone users will be able to install it on their iPhone like Classic Mac Plus OS.

So does that mean I can finally use my bluetooth keyboard?

  2. iPhoneHacks says:

    Hey metromepmb,

This is just an emulator running on your iPhone, its will work like any
    other iPhone app.

In case you are interested in pairing your bluetooth keyboard with the
iPhone, you might want to check out this post where iPhone expert Ralf
Ackermann has managed to get Apple's Bluetooth keyboard (can be any
Bluetooth keyboard) to pair with a hacked iPhone without any external
    Bluetooth module.

I can see it coming … WindowsXP on the iPhone
    MacOs 7 … VMware … Windows
Still better than a PC :)

  8. iPhoneHacks says:

Incidentally at VMWorld Europe, *VMWare* unveiled the firm’s mobile
virutalization platform. They demoed both Windows CE and Android running
side by side, on a Nokia N800 handset.

So maybe we are not too far away, but we will pass on that one :)
