Apple Seeds 3rd Beta of iPhone OS 3.0: Includes Improvements to Push Notification Service & More

iPhone firmware 3.0 event

Apple has just seeded developers of their iPhone Developer Program with the third beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0 which Apple had previewed last month.

The third beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0 (Build: 7A280f) arrives exactly two weeks after the second beta version was released.

iPhone developers are already reporting that they have observed some improvements and changes.

iPhone developers have already observed the following improvements and changes in the third beta version of iPhone OS 3.0 (Build: 7A280f):

  • Appears to be lot more snappier during keyboard input and use of App Store application.
  • Spotlight saves its last search results.
  • Apple seems to have made improvements to the Push Notification Service in the latest beta version. Ars Technica is reporting:
The major change in the UIKit API is that Apple has added separate types for the three notification methods: badge, text alert, and sound. Developers can register their apps for these different notification types individually for the needs of their users. Previously, apps registered to received remote notifications but controlled the type via settings. Developers we spoke to universally agreed that this was a welcome improvement.

Apple has also released an updated version of iPhone SDK (Build: 9M2728) which includes the following changes:

  • New Overview toolbar.
  • Revamped assistant interface for creating new projects, targets and files.

Dashcode, the integrated development environment (IDE) for creating Dashboard widgets has also been updated to allow the creation of iPhone-optimized web applications.

Apple had finally included Push Notifications support in the second beta version of iPhone OS 3.0. The second beta version had also revealed a new feature (or enhancement) where you will now be allowed to have 11 Home screens (pages of iPhone apps) instead of the current restriction of 9 Home screens.

As always, we will let you know if we get any more details so stay tuned here at iPhone hacks.

Push is great but will 3.0 be able to open multi-programs like the Plam-Pre

  2. al-d says:

good question i hope someone with the OS can take the time to answer wickedweasel's question

  3. jack mehoff says:

no it won't. you won't ever be able to have apps open in the background unless you use backgrounder on a jailbroken phone. push is apple's way of covering that.

  4. TJ says:

Too bad it requires activation to use….. ;)

  5. Geogo3r says:

    Yeah :/
I paid the $8 to get my hands on it. Thought it let me use MMS but I later found out that that wont be available until it's officially released. Still love it though! :D

  6. Ybt says:

There is a way to get mms to work just google it. My friend has it working on his 3.0 beta two just fine.

  7. Jamal says:

you can have mms. i am on att and have mms, just have to have a family unlimited messaging added to your phone account.

  8. Zoltan says:

as in multitasking? no, apple says no, and we say they're right, even some apps crash because of not enough ram now! why run more in the background? push was an elegant solution, sorry though (backgrounder works, makes everything less stable but it works)

  9. Geogo3r says:

Yeah but I can't get an online AT&T account for some reason which means I can't get on MediaNet to enable MMS :/

  10. Geogo3r says:

    And I have unlimited messaging

  11. Geogo3r says:

One feature that nobody has seemed to pick up on as far as I can tell is the seek speed at which you can scroll through a song in the iPod is adjustable.

While you have your finger pressed on the dot to move the time slider from left to right, you slide your finger down to lower the seek sensitivity (making the slider move more slowly with movement of your finger for finding exactly the spot you want.)

  12. toni says:

is the 3rd beta 3.0 leaked out yet?

  13. Bill says:

Hi Yes it has been leaked i already on torrent only have tried it much faster but one problem i cant get in the cellular data network settings it will crash on you once you tap on it and takes you to the homepage but i have found a temporary way to fix that just re-edit your carriers ipcc file and find apn in the code and edit the settings and re patch it again and upload it to your phone again.

Any hope you enjoying using it if you are planning on using it.

  14. Geogo3r says:

I guess you could say leaked… Although you still need to be listed as a developer.

  15. you dont need to be listed as a developer.

    1) Jailbreak it using Quickpwn, Dont activate
    2) Use iutilites to change the version string to 5G77
    3) Reboot iPhone
    4) activate.
    5) Change version string back

    Search on hackint0sh.

  16. Bill says:

Hi am not a developer but i am linked to a developers account for the time been.

  17. Dunlop says:

I guess you could say leaked… Although you still need to be listed as a developer.
